Week 7 Player and Pitcher of the Week Named

During each week of the 2018 PGCBL season, the league office will recognize one position player and one pitcher as the League's Player and Pitcher of the Week. One of the most dominant starts in league history provided the Pitcher of the Week honor, while a big week on a charging team supplied the Player of the Week.

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce the selection of Elmira's Mason Hazelwood (Kentucky) as the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week, and Utica's Luis DeLeon (Central Alabama CC) as the PGCBL Player of the Week.

Hazelwood climbed the mound at Dunn Field on Sunday against the PGCBL West champion Jamestown Jammers, and posted one of the most prolific outings in league history. The lefthander struck out 16 of the 24 hitters he faced, allowing just two hits and one walk to a potent Jamestown lineup. It marked the sixth time this season where Hazelwood struck out at least eight hitters, and tied the PGCBL record for strikeouts in a season with 74. His efforts on the mound over seven innings led the Pioneers to a 4-1 win over the Jammers.

During his freshman season at Kentucky, Hazelwood appeared in 18 games for the Wildcats, striking out 19 batters in 19 innings, and did not allow a run in five of his last seven outings. For the Pioneers this summer, he has recorded a 5-1 record with a 1.84 ERA. Hazelwood has struck out 74 batters in 44 innings with just 14 walks. The Pitcher of the Week honor marks the second such honor of the season for the lefty, who split the award with Albany's Deaven Phillips during the final full week of June.

DeLeon helped to spark a winning week for the Utica Blue Sox, who have moved into second place in the PGCBL Central entering the final full week. The infielder from Providence, Rhode Island hit safely in all five games on the week, including four multi-hit efforts. He drove in six runs, with at least one RBI coming in four of the five contests. The Central Alabama CC product hit three doubles, and hit his first home run of the season in Thursday's 16-7 victory over the Adirondack Trail Blazers.

At Central Alabama this season, DeLeon scored 30 runs with 16 RBIs over 54 games for the Trojans, and stole 12 bases. The infielder has been a lynchpin in the Blue Sox's lineup this season, posting a .396 batting average in 101 at bats. That batting average is good for third in the PGCBL, as his batting average of .425 over the past month.

The PGCBL is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Hazelwood and DeLeon over the last seven days. The league will continue to honor the best performances in the PGCBL throughout the rest of the summer with both nightly and weekly awards.
