Dawgs Shut Out by AdirondackLITTLE FALLS, NY – On Little Falls Mets night at Veteran's Memorial Park, the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs hoped to elicit hopes of the 1984 minor league team that won the New York-Penn League Championship. Unfortunately, Mike Sansone of the Adirondack Trail Blazers made sure to elicit memories of the 1962 major league Mets. He pitched a complete-game shutout in Adirondack's 8-0 win over the Diamond Dawgs, extending their losing streak to three games and keeping pace with the entire Central Division for those two coveted playoff spots. David Marcano (Katy, TX/NJIT) kicked off the scoring for the Trail Blazers in the first, hitting a ball that bounced all the way to the right-center field wall. That double by Mercano would score his brother Julio (Katy, TX/NJIT). From there, it turned into an old-fashioned pitcher's duel between Adirondack's Sansone (Cheshire, CT/Fairfield) and Mohawk Valley's Ryan Rodriguez (Upland, CA/UC Davis). Neither pitcher allowed a run and only five hits combined. That duel would end in the seventh, as reliever Alex MacKinnon (Aurora, Ontario, Canada/Niagara) gave up back-to-back doubles by Mike Caruso (Wallingford, CT/Fairfield) and Jon Iadevaia (Commack, NY/Adelphi), scoring Caruso and giving the Trail Blazers a 2-0 lead. Iadevaia would score a little later on a passed ball by MacKinnon. Isiah Daubon (Highland, NY/Sacred Heart) would also get into the scoring, sacrificing a hit for himself to score Julio Mercano with the bases loaded, as would Matt Rubayo (Skillman, NJ/Marist) with an RBI single to score Anthony Boselli (Ventor City, NJ/Fairfield). Rubayo added more insurance for the Trail Blazers in the ninth, slamming a ball to straightaway center field to score himself, Boselli and Daubon. That four-run outburst in the seventh would be all Sansone would need, finishing what he started by only allowing a single to Joel Alvarez (Hainesport, NJ/Barry) to end the game. Sansone picked up the complete-game win for Adirondack (15-19). Rodrgiuez was saddled with the loss for the Diamond Dawgs (20-13). Mohawk Valley only has two more games before the All-Star break, both during the weekend. On Saturday, they'll make a trip to Murnane Field for a game with the Utica Blue Sox, the final time they will travel to see Utica this season. On Sunday, they'll return to Veteran's Memorial Park for their second and final meeting this year with their long-time rival, the Amsterdam Mohawks. Adirondack has only two more games before the All-Star break as well, but it will be part of a three-game home stand that will finish up after the All-Star Game. The Trail Blazers will welcome the Jamestown Jammers to the Robert Smith Sports Complex on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, they'll look to keep pace in the Central Division's race for a playoff spot when the Watertown Rapids come to Boonville. |
