Glens Falls, NY-The Glens Falls Dragons and Oneonta Outlaws played a doubleheader on a scorching hot night at East Field on Friday. Both teams entered the evening with .500 records, but only a half a game out of first in the tight PGCBL East Division race.
In the first game Julien Arcos (LIU-Post) started on the bump for the Dragons against Logan Moody (Georgia) for the Outlaws. Oneonta scored single runs in the third and fifth and put a three spot up in the seventh to take a 5-1 win.
Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Logan Thomason (Eastern Kentucky) singled and came in to score on a groundout by Cassius Young (Georgia College).
Oneonta extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Young smacked a solo homer off of Arcos.
Glens Falls got on the board in the sixth when Moody walked two batters and hit another to load the bases. Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire) then grounded out against Oneonta reliever Trevor Backman (Marist) scoring Danny Ryan (Fairfield) to make it 2-1.
The Outlaws extended their lead in the seventh. Thomason doubled off of Glens Falls reliever Sam Czbala (Xavier). Derek Orndorff (Penn State) then walked and he and Thomason both scored on a throwing error by Czabala to make it 4-1. Anthony Eaton (Brockport) then added an RBI single to make it 5-1 Oneonta.
Backman set Glens Falls down in order in the seventh to hand Oneonta the win.
Noah Cabrera was 3 for 3 for the Outlaws. Tom Kreztler (Brockport) had a pair of hits.
Moody (2-0) earned the win for 9-8 Oneonta. Arcos (1-1) took the loss for Glens Falls 10-11.
In the nightcap Oneonta picked up right where they left off in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first against Glens Falls starter Tom Taplin (Georgetown College). Orndorff led off the game by being hit by Taplin and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Eaton to lead 1-0.
Glens Falls got even in the bottom of the frame against Oneonta starter Will Vanbeusekom (Marist). Josh Ardnt (Cornell) hit a one out single and advanced to second on an error. Ardnt came around to score on a double down the left field line by Ryan to make it 1-1.
The Dragons took the lead in the second for the first time on the night. Andrew Stanley (Arkansas) led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single from Michael Hooper (Cabrillo College). Glens Falls added another run in the inning to move ahead 3-1 when a sacrifice fly by Nick Kondo (UAlbany) scored Brian Hart (Marist) who had walked earlier in the inning.
The Outlaws got a run back in the fourth Kretzler singled, stole second and scored on a Dragon's throwing error to make it 3-2.
Glens Falls responded in the bottom of the inning against Oneonta's Brian Hendry (St. John's). Hart walked and scored on a groundout by Kondo to extend the margin to 4-2. The Dragons were looking for more as they loaded the bases, but Oneonta brought in Rick Burroni (Northeastern) to halt the rally.
Oneonta made it a one run game again in the top of the fifth when Orndorff was hit, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Cabrera. The Outlaws scored three more runs in the inning on a two-RBI triple by Kretzler and an RBI single by Chris Polletta (Fairfield) to chase Taplin from the mound after taking a 6-4 lead.
Burroni (1-1) benefited from the Oneonta four run fifth to earn the win on the mound. Zack Bowers (Erskine) earned the save. Taplin (0-4) took the loss for the Dragons.
With the sweep Oneonta is 10-8. Glens Falls drops to 10-12.
