Mohawks Fly High with Blowout Win

The Mohawks restored order on Saturday night, rebounding from their worst performance of the season with a 14-4 bludgeoning of the Albany Dutchmen in the state’s capital.

Jack Fischer (Wake Forest) picked up his third win of the summer behind seven strong innings, he allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out five. After he was touched for two runs in the bottom of the second inning, Fischer allowed just a single hit over the next five.

The Mohawks were helped by a couple of early power surges from two unlikely candidates. In the top of the second, Brad Picha (Paris JC) blasted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot that soared over the 406 foot marker in dead center.

After Luke Maile (Kentucky) was injured in last night’s game, the catcher was unavailable on Saturday evening. In his absence, Andrew Green (East Tennessee State), normally the team’s leadoff hitter, shifted into the cleanup spot in the order. When he came to the plate with two runners aboard in the top of the third, the lefty hitter did his best Maile impression by connecting with a three-run homer that sailed over the right-field wall, the dinger put the Mohawks ahead 6-2 and they did not look back.

Demarcus Henderson (Mississippi State) knocked in another run with a single in the fourth and Fischer helped his own cause with a two-run double in the seventh. The Hawks tacked on three more runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to provide the final margin.

Derrick Brewer (Radford) was dented for two runs in an inning of relief when he allowed three consecutive hits in the eighth.

The win pushes the Mohawks (28-16) back to 12 games above .500 and the Dutchmen slip to 17-24. As the season winds down, the Mohawks and Glens Falls Golden Eagles vie for the top overall seed in the PGCBL, The Mohawks will host the Golden Eagles on Sunday night at 7:00.
