BOONVILLE, N.Y. - Mother Nature threatened action Sunday at "The Smith" with dark storm clouds, but the Adirondack Trail Blazers and Albany Dutchmen were able to play five full innings before getting rained out leaving the Blazers victorious 8-2.
After a brief first two innings, Adirondack was able to record the first hits and runs between the two teams in the bottom of the third. Bret Huebner (Furman) and Tyler Bruno (Iona) picked up a base hit and scored off a two-run double by Lou Matarazzo (Iona) giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Albany cut the lead in half with an RBI double from Chase Allen (Limestone) scoring Brad Gneiting (Rice). The Dutchmen, however, struggled to get men on base, putting only four men on throughout the contest.
The Trail Blazers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Joe Simone (Rider) hit an RBI double and Matarazzo walked with the bases loaded, bringing in Zach Zschering (Adrian).
Trailing 4-1 going into the top of the fifth, and with black clouds threatening play, Albany did not back down. Chris Villa (Seton Hall) got hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a base hit from Nick Estrella (Azusa Pacific). Villa stole third base and scored off a sacrifice fly to center from Peyton Sockwell (North Alabama). Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, the Trail Blazers' fielding kept them at bay and the third out was made.
Entering the bottom of the fifth, the skies opened up and the fans scattered for cover, but play continued for the time being. Zschering hit an RBI single to give his club a 5-2 lead. Three batters later, Bruno slashed the ball into the right field corner for a two-RBI, stand up triple. A fielding error by the Dutchmen allowed Bruno to score one batter later.
Once the final out was made in the fifth, Adirondack led 8-2 and the coaches from both teams and game officials agreed to delay the game due to heavy rain. After about 20 minutes, the rain had let up, but a quick meeting between officials and coaches resulted in the game being called due to the weather and poor field conditions.
Bryce Van Horn (Nova Southeastern) recorded his first win this season, improving his season record to 1-1. Jack Grabeck (Bucknell) earned his first loss; his 2017 record is now 0-1.
Albany will have a chance at redemption against the Trail Blazers on June 26, the game scheduled to take place in Boonville.
Adirondack will host the Elmira Pioneers on Monday, the third game of a four-game homestand.
