Red Wings Defeat Flames 6-4

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Onondaga Flames (3-5) battled hard and took a tough loss against the visiting Geneva Red Wings (6-2) as they fell 6-4.

Brian Nolan (SUNY Oswego) made his debut for the Flames and got in trouble early after a leadoff walk got to second base before the first out was recorded.  However, Nolan worked around it with a couple of strikeouts and a groundout to short.  Nolan again got in to trouble in the second loading the bases on walks, but once again worked out of it as he struck out the side.  All together Nolan finished with eight strikeouts while allowing two runs on six hits and five walks.

For Geneva starter Slater O’Brien (St. Joseph’s) also had to work out of some tough jams early.  With the bases loaded second baseman Jake Lyle (Volunteer St. CC) made a savvy play on a line drive to get a double play.

Onondaga finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Sam Little scored on a throwing error by Geneva shortstop Justin Etts (NJIT).  Stephen Bennett (Canisius) followed that play up with an RBI single to tie the game at two.

Geneva ran the lead back up to three in the seventh inning with hits by Justin Barr (Central Alabama CC) and Joseph Tassin (Bossier Parish CC). Onondaga answered that when Alex Canty (Monroe CC) drove home Webb Little (Ithaca) on a sac fly following Little’s triple. Kyle Gallagher (Cornell) drove in college teammate Trey Baur with an RBI single in the eigth the pull the Flames within one.

However, Geneva got an insurance run in the top of the ninth and had Colby Mulllins (Andrew) nail down the save in the bottom of the ninth.

Onondaga head coach Ryan Stevens saw improvement but ultimately said the team still lacked timely hitting.

"We still didn’t execute and drive runners in and that’ll be the death of you," he stated.

Onondaga’s next game is at Dunn Field in Elmira in Tuesday as they face the Elmira Pioneers.
