The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce its’ weekly award winners for the fifth week of the 2011 season. The awards are based on games played between July 11 and July 17.

After slugging his way into the PGCBL record books over the weekend, Watertown outfielder Erick Gaylord (Campbell) has been selected as the PGCBL Player of the Week. Newark starting pitcher Carson Beauchaine (Saginaw Valley State) has been tabbed PGCBL Pitcher of the Week.

Saturday night in Amsterdam, Erick Gaylord mashed four home runs and finished 5-for-5 with seven RBI as the Watertown Wizards defeated the nationally-ranked Amsterdam Mohawks 9-8. Sunday afternoon, Gaylord slugged two solo home runs in his final two at-bats against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes at Doubleday Field.  The Watertown center fielder totaled six clouts in his final 10 plate appearances of the week.

Overall, the Atlanta, Ga., native batted .458 (11-for-24) over six games, all on the road, with six home runs and 10 RBI. He scored seven times, walked twice and produced four multi-hit games. Gaylord accumulated a 1.208 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Defensively, the Campbell University product recorded three outfield assists. Gaylord earned two of the three helpers by throwing out runners attempting to score.

Through 32 games played, Gaylord leads the PGCBL with nine home runs and 36 RBI, both of which are Watertown single-season franchise records. His .360 batting average and 40 hits both rank fourth among PGCBL hitters. He has posted 11 multi-hit games including a pair of five-hit performances.

Carson Beauchaine pitched a combined 13.0 innings in two starts for the Newark Pilots last week; he did not allow a hit in 10 of those frames. Beauchaine went 1-1 with a 0.69 earned run average. He allowed one earned run on three hits, walked four and struck out 17. Opponents against the Newark starter mustered a .075 batting average.

The Fraser, Mich., native was masterful on Sunday against division-rival Elmira at Newark’s Colburn Park. Beauchaine tossed a two-hit shutout over eight innings, walked one and struck out 11. He was nearly perfect through six with a two-out walk in the third being his only blemish. Beauchaine no-hit the Pioneers for six and two-thirds innings. He did not allow a runner to advance past safely past first base and retired 24 of the 27 batters he faced. The 11-strikeout performance was Beauchaine’s third of the season. Earlier in the week against red-hot Albany, Beauchaine gave up one hit over five innings, walked one and struck out six. He no-hit the Dutchmen through the first four innings and then yielded two scores (one earned) in the fifth.

Heading into the All-Star Break, Beauchaine is 2-1 with a 2.05 earned run average over seven starts. He leads the league with 51 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched and his ERA is third-best among all PGCBL starting pitchers.
