Pilots to Welcome Taiwanese Pair to Newark This Summer

Newark, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots are pleased to announce the signing of two Taiwanese prospects for the upcoming 2016 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) season.

Bo-Hao Huang and Ching-Wei Sen, who both hail from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, will travel halfway around the world to join the Pilots in upstate New York this summer.

“Not only is this is a great opportunity for Bo-Hao Huang and Ching-Wei Sen to experience baseball in the U.S., but it is an equally exciting opportunity for the Newark Pilots organization,” said team owner Bob Ohmann. “We look forward to hosting both Huang and Sen, allowing them to see what the beautiful Finger Lakes region has to offer while continuing to develop their talents on the field.”

“Our goal is to help Huang and Sen grasp the nuances of American baseball, but I am confident there will be plenty I can learn from their experiences in Taiwan,” said Newark head coach Chris Edmondson. “This will also be a great experience for the other Pilots and I look forward to seeing those relationships develop throughout the summer.”

Huang is a freshman at Fu Jen Catholic University, located in New Taipei City. At 5-foot-11, 176-pounds, he can play first base or either corner outfield position, and will add another left-handed bat to the Newark lineup.

Said Huang about wanting to play for the Pilots, “I want to see how much of a difference there is between baseball and the level of competition in Taiwan and in the U.S.”

Sen is a senior at Vanung University – situated approximately 40 minutes southwest of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taoyuan City – but has one year of athletic eligibility remaining. The 5-foot-11 right-handed batter will play on the left side of the infield at shortstop or third base.

“I would like to take a look at the American style of baseball and help the Newark Pilots win a championship,” Sen said.

Martin Chen, founder and president of ROF Sports and Entertainment Agency, helped place Huang and Sen with the Pilots this offseason. Last summer, Chen, a former translator for numerous minor league players and international scout for the Oakland Athletics, aided the Utica Brewers in securing two players from the National Taiwan Sport University. His goal for placing Taiwanese college players in the PGCBL is to create another avenue for these international athletes to get noticed by scouts.

“We are interested in developing various career opportunities for baseball players in Taiwan,” Chen said. “Last year, we placed two players in the PGCBL. We hope to build a long-term relationship with the Newark Pilots and send more players their way in the future.”

The Newark Pilots open the 2016 PGCBL season on the road on Wednesday, June 1, against the Jamestown Jammers. The home opener at historic Colburn Park is scheduled for Friday, June 3, at 7:05 p.m. against the Geneva Red Wings.
