John Means, who pitched for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in 2012, threw a no-hitter for Class A Delmarva Friday afternoon. Means became the second PGCBL alumnus to throw a no-hitter this season, joining James Dykstra (Amsterdam 2011), who threw one on April 15.
Means faced off against the Charleston Riverdogs, an affiliate of the New York Yankees. In his seven-inning no-hitter, the left-hander struck out six batters and allowed just one walk. His Game Score, a statistic devised by Bill James to measure how good a start actually was, was 82.
With the no-hitter, Means is now 8-7 on the season with a 3.48 ERA.
Means’ No-Hitter Box Score
During the 2012 summer with Mohawk Valley, Means went 3-2 with a 1.26 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts). Opponents hit just .186 off the southpaw as he struck out 49 batters in 43 innings.
The last no-hitter thrown by a player in the PGCBL was by Amsterdam’s Taylor Blatch on July 27, 2014. That game was also a seven-inning affair. The right-hander struck out five batters and allowed six to reach base, one on an error in the fifth inning.
