Pioneers Blowout the Pilots in Pink in the Park Night, Clinch First Place in the West Division

Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers raised awareness for breast cancer tonight as the players, the park and even the fans inside put on pink to show their support during Elmira’s 21-4 victory over the Newark Pilots. With the win, the Elmira Pioneers clinch the first place spot in the West Division title to receive home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Pilots would strike first as Blake Valley (San Francisco) singled to start the inning and would reach third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. An RBI groundout from Cody Wiktorski (St. John Fisher) would bring in Valley and an error by Tommy Mirabelli (Kansas) would allow Kyle Norman (San Francisco) to score from second base. Willy Yahn (Connecticut) would strikeout after Wiktorski was putout at first on a pickoff but would reach on a dropped third strike. An RBI double from Corey Lerche (Central Connecticut) and a RBI single from James Baer (Delta) would power the Pilots lead to 4-0.

The Pioneers would answer with a run of their own in the first and second innings as Will LaRue (Xavier) would reach on a bunt single and then score on a Wiktorski error in the first. In the second inning, an error would allow Sam Clark (Bucknell), who reached on a single to right field, to score. After LaRue reached on a fielder’s choice, an RBI Double from Justin Hayes (Old Dominion) would allow LaRue to score and later a passed ball from Baer would allow Hayes to score after he was moved to third from a groundout. The score was tied at 4-4.

The Pioneers would score four runs in the fourth, as the Pioneers would capitalize on another error by the Pilots and a pair of RBI doubles from Hayes and Hayden Kelly (Florida State) and an RBI single from Christian Santisteban (Manhattan). The score at this point would be 8-4.

After Taylor Hillson singled in the bottom of the fifth, lightning would strike halting the game for a half hour. During this time the Pioneers had a chance to meet with fans, sign autographs and having a little fun on the field. When play resumed, another error from the Pilots, a pair of singles, a walk, a hit by pitch and an RBI double by Josh Lovelady (Mississippi St.) would send Kevin Berge (St. John Fisher) away as the Pioneers would finish off the fifth with six more runs, padding Elmira’s lead to 14-4.

A six run sixth inning was capped by a two run home run by Christian Santisteban and a three run triple by Will LaRue. The Pioneers would bring in another run on a sac fly, bringing the final score to 21-4.

The winning pitcher for the night was Will Zirzow who pitched six innings, struck out eight batters, walked one and allowed four runs. Getting the loss for Newark would be Kevin Berge who pitched one inning, gave away nine hits and allowed ten runs.
