Grand Slam by Hayden Kelly Lifts Pioneers Over Rival RailRidersELMIRA, NY- After a close call in the first inning, scoring really got started in the second inning when the Elmira Pioneers took on the Victor Railriders at historic Dunn field. The Pioneers scored first in the ball game when they put three runs on the board. Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) would walk to reach first, and then move over on a Josh Lovelady (Mississippi) walk. Tommy Mirabelli (Kansas) then stepped up for a deep centerfield double that allowed Santisteban to run home.
Sam Clark (Bucknell) then stepped up to the bat and was walked. Victory pitcher Eoin McAvinchey (St. Leo) then received a balking call which allowed Lovelady to score, making the score 2-0. Keegan Maronpot (Wake Forest) then stepped up and was also walked by McAvinchey, who had six walks in the inning. Mirabelli then came home on a sacrifice grounder. Will Larue (Xavier) would also be walked, and would injure himself stealing second, forcing Matt Burch to bring in Hayden Kelly (Florida State). Justin Hayes (Old Dominion) would have the Pioneers second and final hit of the inning, an RBI single which brought Kelly and Clark home.
The final run of the inning would be scored by Hayes, who stole second and was moved over to third on a wild pitch. Rob Perteet (Samford) walked next, and we were back to the top of the order for the inning. Perteet would steal second, and when the ball was thrown to second, it would allow Hayes to come home. This gave the Pioneers a 6-0 lead.
The Railriders would score three runs of their own just half an inning later, when Matt Fallon (Black Hawk) was walked by Elmira pitcher Kyano Cummings (Siena). Brady Acker (George Mason) would then step up with a single, and the bases would be loaded when Mark Cardinalli (UC-Davis) walked. Fallon would come home on a fielder’s choice, one which also allowed Evan Fernandez (Jacksonville) to reach first. Nolan Schultz (Rochester) then loaded the bases with a walk, and a wild pitch would bring Acker home. Chris Lehane (Jacksonville) then hit a single off of Cummings leg to bring Fernandez home, making the score 6-3.
The Pioneers would score one more run in the third, after Josh Lovelady stepped up for a single. He would be moved over on another balking call, and a wild pitch. He would also come home on a wild pitch, giving the Pioneers a four run lead.
Another four runs would come on an amazing Grand Slam for Hayden Kelly, his first home run of the season. Tommy Mirabelli stepped up first for a double which hit the centerfield wall. Sam Clark would be hit by a pitch, and after a walk from Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) the bases were loaded. Kelly came up and smashed a ball over the wall in right field, bringing home all four runners and extending the lead to 11-3.
Victor would score in the top of the sixth after a single from Chris Introcaso (Saint Rose). Introcaso would be moved over on a single rom Lehane. A sacrifice fly would move Introcaso over, and he would come home on a single from Dale Wickham.
Victor would put one more run up in the eighth inning off a walk for Schultz. Schultz was moved over on a single from Chris Introcaso, and would move over again on a wild pitch. Schultz would come home on a sacrifice grounder, making the score 11-5.
Victor would score again in the ninth inning after pinch hitter Aaron Endres (Norfolk State) reached on a fielding error from the Pioneers. Endres would come home on a deep left field double from Nolan Schultz.
The game would be final at 11-6 as the Pioneers took a lead in the 5th that Victor could not recover from. Kyano Cummings won the game for Elmira, pitching through six innings for nine strikeouts. This improved his season total to a league leading 55. Taking the loss for Victor would be Eoin McAvinchey, who started the game for the Railriders.
The Elmira Pioneers play two more home games this weekend as Hall’s Home and Lumber Country Weekend continues.Tomorrow’s game is against the Amsterdam Mohawks and features a Pionettes poster giveaway.
