2015 PGCBL Midseason Report![]() PC: Corey Mansfield/Brokenbatblog.com (@Broken_Bat_Blog) We have reached the halfway point of the 2015 PGCBL season. Almost every team has played 25 games. Below you will find some statistics that have stood out for each team and an update as to where they are in the league. Adirondack Trail Blazers The Adirondack Trail Blazers currently sit in fifth place in the West Division, trailing the Elmira Pioneers by 6.5 games. The Trail Blazers are 2-8 in their last 10 games and now have a record of 10-17. The Trail Blazers are being led at the plate by Chris Kwitzer, who is hitting .386 on the season. His .386 mark trails only Elmira’s Christian Santisteban for the PGCBL-lead. Kwitzer also has 12 RBIs on the season, which leads Adirondack. Evan Alderman has stolen nine bases to lead the team and he has also hit an impressive .338. Tom Fazzini and Joe King have been the aces of the pitching staff, posting ERAs of 0.49 and 0.75, respectively. Both have appeared in nine games and have a combined three wins and four saves. As a team, Adirondack’s .260 team batting average is the third-highest in the PGCBL and the Trail Blazers’ .703 OPS is also the third-best mark in the league. On the mound, Adirondack has a 4.33 team ERA, the fourth-highest in the league. Opponents have hit .264 off Trail Blazer pitching which is the second-highest average in the league. Albany Dutchmen The Albany Dutchmen are currently in fourth place in the East Division, trailing the Amsterdam Mohawks by 8.5 games. The Dutchmen have won three straight games to push their record in their last 10 games to 3-7. On the season, Nick Davey’s club is 11-13. Grayson Lewis currently has the highest batting average among qualifiers for the Dutchmen, hitting .291 in 17 games played. Sean Aspinall, the Week Five Player of the Week, has driven in a team-high 17 runs with two home runs and a .278 batting average. On the mound, Mike Reitcheck leads Albany with a 3-1 record and a 2.33 ERA in 27 innings of work. Reitcheck has struck out more than a batter per inning pitched and has also tossed a complete game. Zak Spivy has also put up impressive numbers—posting a 2.57 ERA in nine appearances (all in relief). Albany’s team batting average of .234 is the lowest in the PGCBL and Dutchmen hitters have gotten on base at a .340 mark. Albany base runners are last in the PGCBL with 23 steals. Albany’s team ERA of 4.67 is the second-highest in the league and opponents have hit .254 off them, the fourth-highest mark in the league. Amsterdam Mohawks The three-time PGCBL champions have continued their winning ways this season, going 21-6 to start the year including an 11-game win streak. The Mohawks currently lead the East Division by 6.5 games. The duo of Hunter Tackett and Brendan Tracy have led the Amsterdam lineup. Tackett has hit .345 with five home runs with a team-leading 23 RBIs and 15 stolen bases while Tracy has hit a team-leading .353 with a PGCBL-leading six home runs and 22 RBIs. On the mound, Anthony Romanelli has yet to allow an earned run in nine appearances and Christian Maldonado has a 0.56 ERA in 11 appearances. Fernando Guerrero has been the ace of the pitching staff with a 1.96 ERA and a 3-1 record in five starts. As a team, the Mohawks lead the league in nearly every major statistical category. Keith Griffin’s club has hit .274 withan OPS of .808 and have slugged 24 home runs, 15 more than the next closest team. On the mound, the Mohawks (3.02) trail Newark (2.85) in team ERA, but lead the league in WHIP (1.19) and opponent batting average (.210). Elmira Pioneers The Elmira Pioneers currently lead the West Division by three games over the Victor RailRiders. The Pioneers are 7-3 in their last 10 games to move their record to 17-11 on the year. Christian Santisteban and Will LaRue have led the Pioneers on offense. Santisteban leads the league with a .443 batting average and is tied for the league-lead with 23 RBIs. His four home runs are the third-most in the league and his OPS of 1.262 also leads the league. The Pioneers have four pitchers who have thrown a significant amount of innings have ERAs under 2.50, led by Michael Scarinci’s 0.84 ERA in nine appearances. Kyano Cummings, the Week Five Pitcher of the Week, currently leads the league with 45 strikeouts and has a 1.55 ERA to go with a 1.03 WHIP. Elmira currently has the second-highest team batting average at .267 and its .736 OPS also only trails Amsterdam for the PGCBL lead. Despite the success of a few pitchers, Elmira’s team ERA of 4.79 is the highest in the league. Glens Falls Dragons The Glens Falls Golden Eagles are currently in second place in the East Division, trailing the Amsterdam Mohawks by 6.5 games. The Dragons are 15-13 on the season and have won seven of their last 10 games. Mark Powell currently leads the Dragons with a .348 batting average, while Jake Vieth has been the driving force behind the Dragons’ recent surge. Vieth is hitting .293 with a team-leading 22 RBIs on the season. Danny Oliveri leads the team with 10 stolen bases and is tied for the PGCBL lead with 31 runs scored. Matt Stojkov has a 1.92 ERA in 10 appearances on the mound and Sam Steeves has a 2.38 ERA in five starts to lead the pitching staff. As a team, the Dragons currently have the sixth-highest batting average in the league at .247, but have gotten on base more than 37 percent of the time. The Dragons pitching staff has posted a 3.92 ERA, good for fifth in the league. The Dragons have hit .247 on the year and opponents have also hit .247 against them. Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs are currently in third place in the East Division, trailing the Amsterdam Mohawks by eight games. The DiamondDawgs are 4-6 in their past 10 games and are 11-12 overall. Outfielder Troy Scocca has the highest qualifying batting average on the team at .325. Scocca has hit a single home run and is tied for the team lead with 14 RBIs. Scocca also leads the team with six stolen bases and has clubbed six triples. Thomas Walraven has also put up impressive numbers, including a .318 batting average. Relievers Anthony Herrera and Zachary Vennaro have yet to allow an earned run, but do not have enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. Vennaro has four saves on the season. Starter Ben Moxely is 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA in five starts to anchor the pitching staff. Mohawk Valley is hitting .244 as a team and has a .668 OPS, both in the bottom half of the league. The DiamondDawgs’ team ERA of 4.52 is the third-worst in the league, but have struck out 179 batters which is good for the fourth-best mark in the league. Newark Pilots The Newark Pilots are currently in third place in the West Division and trail the Elmira Pioneers by 4.5 games. The Pilots are 5-5 in their past 10 games and are 10-13 overall. Cody Wiktorski leads the Newark offense with a .354 average and is tied for the team lead with two home runs. Mark Martin is tied with Willy Yahn for the team lead with 14 RBIs, while Martin has clubbed an impressive .339. Both Wiktorski and Martin have “created” more than 13 runs, nearly four more than the next closes Pilot.
Vinny Martin, Daniel Imbro and Jordan Fuller have appeared in a combined 13 games and have yet to allow an earned run. Jacob Wloczewski has been the ace of the staff, however, posting a 1.46 ERA in five starts and he leads PGCBL qualifiers with a .167 batting average against. As a team, Newark currently has the second-lowest batting average in the league at .240 and their team OPS of .636 is the lowest in the league. However, the Pilots’ seven home runs and 52 stolen bases both rank in the top five in the league. Their 2.85 ERA is tops in the league and opponents are hitting just .226 off Pilot pitching, which is the second-lowest in the league. Saugerties Stallions Joe Venturino and Clint Hardy currently lead the Stallions with batting averages of .382 and .342, respectively. Hardy has clubbed two home runs and driven in 11 runs to go with five stolen bases. Venturino leads the team in OPS with a .915 mark while Hardy leads the team with 14.684 Runs Created. Andrew Carkner has led the Saugerties pitching staff with a 1.05 ERA in eight appearances, all in relief. Starter Anthony Rocco is 2-2 in six appearances with a 1.51 ERA. As a team, Saugerties is fifth in the league with a .255 batting average and is in the bottom half of the league with a .656 OPS. The Stallions’ 77 runs batted in are the fewest in the PGCBL. On the rubber, a 4.10 team ERA is good for sixth in the league while an opponent batting average of .242 ranks as the third-worst. Utica Brewers The Utica Brewers are currently in fourth place in the West Division and trail the Elmira Pioneers by five games. They are 4-6 in their past 10 games and are 10-14 overall. The 10 wins already this season is more than their nine wins all of last season. Ryan Cox and Kyle Schade have been the catalysts of the Utica offense. Cox is hitting .379, while Schade has hit .341 with a home run and 18 RBIs. Schade leads the team with a .897 OPS and has “created” an even 16 runs, nearly four more than Cox.
The Brewers’ .259 team batting average is the fourth-best in the league and their .696 team OPS is also the fourth-best in the PGCBL. In keeping with the fourth-best trend, Utica’s 3.79 ERA is fourth in the league, but opponents are hitting .267 off Brewer pitching, which is the worst in the league. Victor RailRiders In their first season of play, the Victor RailRiders are in second place in the West Division and trail the Elmira Pioneers by three games. The RailRiders are 4-6 in their past 10 games and are 12-12 overall.
Brady Acker has led the Victor offense with a .357 batting average, eight extra base hits and is tied for second on the team with 12 RBIs. Mark Cardinalli leads the team with two home runs and 15 RBIs. Luke Tomczyk has posted a 0.81 ERA in four starts for the RailRiders, including a complete game. Eoin McAvinchey and John Saviano have ERAs of 1.56 and 1.70, respectively in a combined nine starts. The RailRiders’ team ERA of 3.46 is the third-lowest in the league behind Newark and Amsterdam and their 1.41 WHIP is also the third-lowest in the PGCBL. At the plate has been a different story as a team batting average of .242 is the third-worst in the league. The rosters for the 2015 PGCBL All-Star Game, which will be held in Little Falls on July 20, will be announced next week. It should be an exciting second half of the PGCBL season.
