Newark's D'Amato Earns First "W" Against Mohawk Valley

The Newark Pilots (10-10) defeated the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (6-14) on Wednesday night at Colburn Park by a final score of 10-8 to take the first game of their current home-and-home series.

Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) smacked a RBI double as part of a two-run third frame to go up 3-1. Newark continued to pile on the points with a four-run fourth. The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League's leading batter, Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta), continued his outstanding performance with a RBI double to help Newark gain a 7-1 advantage after four full innings.
Hassan Evans (Herkimer County C.C.) hit a double then scored the DiamondDawgs' second run of the night in the top of the fifth.

Mohawk Valley had a tough time putting together anything more than their two tallies through the first six innings of the game. Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher) was dealing from the start, striking out eight batters without any walks in six innings pitched, getting his first win of the season for Newark.

The DiamondDawgs found some life after the bullpen relieved D'Amato on the mound. Mohawk Valley scored two runs each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to turn what seemed like an easy win into a close battle.

Down 10-4 at the start of the eighth inning, the right-handed Bryan Bleakley (NJIT) went the other way with a solo homer over the right field wall.

Trailing 10-6 in the ninth, Newark closer Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) loaded the bases with two outs. Zach Ciccotti (Mohawk Valley C.C.) singled to score Bleakley and keep the bases full. Scott then walked Michael Gunn (Christian Brothers H.S.) to score another run, bringing the DiamondDawgs within two.

Scott earned his fifth save of the season with the force out at third on a fielder's choice to end the game. Delvalle led all Newark batters, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI's.

Mike Fasolo (Mohawk Valley C.C.) pitched only three and two-third innings in his second loss of the season. Cullen Wacker (Auburn) had a team-high three hits for Mohawk Valley.

The Newark Pilots and the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs finish their home-and-home series in Mohawk Valley tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
