UTICA, NY – Accumulating over 10 hits in their second consecutive game on Tuesday (6/23) didn’t help the Utica Brewers baseball team cash in on a win at Donovan Stadium, losing to Mohawk Valley 6-4 for their second straight PGCBL loss at home.

Utica (8-11) struck first in their bottom half of the first inning after Vincent Capone (Concordia College) and Ryan Cox (Kutztown University) opened the game up with single and double. Both players combined to hit 4-for-7 and score two runs. Driving in Capone in the first was Kyle Schade (St. Andrews University). The junior took his second pitch of the at-bat to second base to score Capone, giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

Mohawk Valley then scored three unanswered runs in the next four innings until four hits and two walks helped Utica score three runs in the fifth to retake the lead 4-3. Schade had another big single, scoring Jared Baldinelli (St. Bonaventure) and Cox to tie the game (3-3), then Dan Vucovich (Holy Cross) made it 4-3 when his infield single reached the grass and scored Schade. Vucovich finished 2-for-4 and Schade finished 3-for-5, collecting their sixth and 13^th run batted in this season.

The Brewers cruised through the game from there and set up freshman Krystein Johnson-Batillana (Davenport University) for the save, but it wasn’t meant to be as three walks and two singles helped the Diamond Dawgs score three runs in their last plate appearance. Sophomore Chris Rave (Herkimer College) had the big hit, serving a ball to left field which scored two and gave Mohawk Valley the 6-4 lead with two outs. It was Rave’s only hit of the game, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate.

Utica’s next game is Wednesday (6/24). They’ll host the Newark Pilots at Donovan Stadium with first pitched scheduled for 6:35 p.m. the last time these two teams played, Utica won the game 6-4.
