Pilots walk off against Adirondack, 4-3, in 14 inningsNEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots scored twice in the bottom of the 14th inning to walk off against the Adirondack Trail Blazers, 4-3, in front of 813 fans at Colburn Park Thursday night. With a 3-2 lead and one out in the bottom of the 14th, the Trail Blazers (4-4) intentionally walked Willy Yahn (Connecticut) to load the bases and push the winning run into scoring position. Two pitches later, a wild pitch from Adirondack reliever John O’Reilly (Rutgers) plated the tying run and allowed Kyle Bartelman (Columbia) to advance to third. With two outs in the frame, Anthony Spina (Amherst) grounded the game-winning RBI single deep into the hole between second and third base, allowing Bartelman to trot home safely. Adirondack had taken a one-run lead in the top of the 14th on a bases-loaded walk from Newark (3-3) reliever Blake Brailsford (BYU) to Evan Alderman (Georgia Southwestern State), forcing in Brad Jones (Florida Tech), who led off the inning with a double off the wall in left. Brailsford (1-0), however, recovered to fan his third batter of the inning during the next at-bat to keep the deficit at one, 3-2. The left-handed freshman earned the win after allowing one unearned run and striking out four in two innings of work. Adirondack’s Joe King (Youngstown State) fell to 1-1 on the season after surrendering two unearned runs in 1.1 innings. Yahn reached base safely in all seven plate appearances, going 5-for-5 with a pair of intentional walks. He tied former Pilots Joe Landi (2012) and Tanner Giesel (2014) for the most hits in a single game in team history. Newark starter Jacob Wloczewski (Binghamton) tossed seven solid innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out four. His counterpart, Tyler Childrose (Siena), only allowed one run on six hits in 5.2 innings. Trailing 2-1, the Pilots knotted the game on a bases-loaded RBI single from Michael Lanza (Bryant) in the seventh, but the Trail Blazers turned a 5-2-3 double play to end the threat in the ensuing at-bat. The Pilots threatened again in the 12th when the first intentional walk to Yahn loaded the bases with two outs, but Frankie Gregoire (Marist) struck out on three pitches to keep the game tied at 2-2. Newark will travel to the newly-formed Victor RailRiders (3-2) for their first-ever matchup at Victor High School tomorrow at 5 p.m. while Adirondack’s two-game road trip ends with a 6:35 p.m. contest at Mohawk Valley (3-4). |
