Last night’s game:

Newark 5 Elmira 3

The Newark Pilots defeated the Elmira Pioneers, 5-3, on Tuesday night to advance to the PGCBL Championship Series for the second time in the four years of the PGCBL. Elmira finished the regular season 26-21 and went 2-1 in the post season.

TJ Dixon gave Elmira a 1-0 lead after just one batter, hitting a solo home run off Newark starter Cam Scalzo. Two batters later, Christian Santisteban hit a double and was then driven in by Nick Walker, who hit a double of his own. The Pioneers added a lone run in the top of the second on a Joey Guaragna RBI single to make it 3-0.

Zach Wall got Newark on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single that scored Tim Lewis. An Austin Clock RBI groundout in the bottom of the third pulled the game within one for the Pilots.

Newark took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Dorian Hariston singled with one away, advanced to second on a Wall single, stole third base and scored on an error by Drew Fisher. Wall then scored on an error by Elmira third baseman Nick Walker to give the Pilots the lead for good. Derek Reed gave the home team an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Tanner Giesel to make it 5-3.

Cam Scalzo threw a quality start in the win for Newark. The right-hander tossed six innings, allowed the three Elmira runs (all earned) and only walked one batter. Travis Laitar, who was named to the second team All-PGCBL on Monday, tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch the save for Newark. Bryson Hough, who won the one-game playoff against Watertown last week, took the loss for Elmira. The right-hander went five innings, allowed the five runs (two earned) while giving up seven hits.

Tonight’s game:

In a rematch of the 2011 PGCBL Championship Series, the Newark Pilots and Amsterdam Mohawks will face each other once again. Amsterdam is looking for its third straight championship, while Newark is looking for its first since the 2011 series. A brief recap of the 2011 series:

Amsterdam took game one behind Josh Alexander’s two RBIs. Games two and three were part of a doubleheader. In game one of the double-header, which wasc held in Amsterdam, Newark scored in the top of the ninth to win 4-3. In the deciding third game, Newark pulled away late to win 7-4 and clinch the first PGCBL Championship.

This year, both Amsterdam and Newark won their divisions. The Mohawks set a PGCBL record with 36 wins, while Newark set a club record with 27 wins. Amsterdam led the league in both batting average and ERA and Newark finished third in the league in both categories. At Shuttleworth Park this year, the Mohawks went 18-5. Newark was just 11-10 on the road, but did win a win-or-go-home game in Elmira to force a decisive third game in the West Division Finals. Amsterdam is 2-0 this postseason and Newark is 2-1.
