WATERTOWN- Watertown (24-17) became the first team in the PGCBL to clinch a postseason berth with a 3-1 victory over visiting Adirondack (16-24). Peter Irvin picked up the win for Watertown. Chris Rheaume (Ave Maria) took the loss for the Trail Blazers.
Watertown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Moroney (Kansas) walked to lead off the inning. Moroney stole second and advanced to third on a single by Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). Following a walk to Trevor Marino (VCU), Moroney came around to score the first run of the game on a J.J. Wagner (Pacific) fielders' choice. Adirondack answered with a run of its own in the top of the second. Matt Chaidez (Cal State Stanislaus) drew a one-out walk and ensued to steal second base. With two outs, Chaidez stole third and came around to score on a throwing error by Rams catcher Collin Theroux (Nevada). The Rams responded by scoring a lone run in the home half of the inning. Riley Smith (Occidental) singled to leadoff the inning and advanced to second on a Cameron Allen (St. John Fisher) walk. Following a Bobby Indeglia (Holy Cross) walk, Joe Moroney grounded into a double play to score Smith.
The Rams increased their lead to 3-1 in the seventh. With two outs, Trevor Marino and JJ Wagner singled. Collin Theroux followed with a walk to load the bases for Bryce Greager (Chandler-Gilbert). Chris Rheaume threw a wild pitch to score Trevor Marino.
The top of the ninth was filled with suspense with both teams. Adirondack's Mike Parsons (Rider) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With Alex Simone (West Alabama) up to bat, Parsons advanced to second on a wild pitch, broke for third on the same play after Collin Theroux threw the ball to second. Parsons advanced to third safely on a throwing error and attempted to make it home. The throw from JJ Wagner to Collin Theroux was in time and Parsons was called out on a close play. Daniel Reitzler (San Diego) then retired Simone and Dan Cecilia (St. John Fisher) to end the game.
Watertown starter Peter Irvin (1-0) hurled six innings allowing one run (unearned) in picking up the win. Irvin finished with eight strikeouts while only allowing two hits. The trio of Josh Amann (JCC), Thomas Casey (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), and Daniel Reitzler tossed three scoreless innings to secure the win. Reitzler notched his second save of the season. Adirondack starter Chris Rheaume (4-4) pitched seven innings allowing three runs (all earned) in the loss. Rheaume struck out six and walked eight.
Dominic Lopez finished 2-for-4 to pace Watertown. Lopez was the only Rams player to tally multiple hits. Trevor Marino posted a 1-for-2 night with a walk.
Connor Garelick (Pepperdine) and Chris Divarco (NIU) both finished 1-for-3 for Adirondack. Mike Parsons also contributed a 1-for-2 night.
All eight hits between both teams were singles as not a single extra-base hit was recorded.
With the win, the Rams became the first team in the PGCBL to clinch a playoff berth. This is the first playoff team in Watertown since the Wizards of 2008. The Watertown franchise will be making its sixth all-time playoff appearance; the Rams made the New York Collegiate Baseball League playoffs every year between 2005 and 2008. The team has never won a regular season division championship but did win the 2003 NYCBL Eastern Division finals over Amsterdam to advance to the NYCBL Championship Series. The Rams magic number to clinch the PGCBL West regular season championship is four. Watertown's current 14-5 home record remains the best in the PGCBL.
Watertown plays host to the Newark Pilots tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Adirondack will travel to Mohawk Valley to face the DiamondDawgs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
