Eight-run fifth propels Rams past Trail Blazers

WATERTOWN- Watertown (7-10) scored eight runs in the fifth inning to break the game open against visiting Adirondack (7-10) and defeat the Trail Blazers 15-3. Austin Lueck (South Florida) finished 3-for-5 with 3-RBIs and a stolen base to pace Watertown. Thomas Casey (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) picked up the win (1-2) for the Rams while Matt Engler (Mohawk Valley C.C.) took the loss (1-1) for the Trail Blazers.

Adirondack jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brandon Jossey (Seton Hill) led off the game with a walk and came around to score on a wild pitch, stolen base, and a throwing error by Watertown catcher Connor Perry (Holy Cross). Watertown answered right back to take a 3-1 lead with runs coming on an RBI double by JJ Wagner (Pacific) and an RBI single by Lueck.

Watertown tallied on two more runs in the home half of the second on a 2-RBI double by shortstop Bryce Greager (Chandler-Gilbert). Adirondack answered with a lone run in the top of the fourth before the bats truly came alive for the home team. In the bottom of the fifth, thirteen batters came to bat with eight coming across to score. Lueck contributed a 2-RBI single but most of the damage was done with walks and wild pitches/passed balls. Six of the eight runs that came across in the inning came via walk/wild pitch/ passed ball. Watertown scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to finish their scoring on the night. Those runs both scored on an RBI single by second baseman Nik Alfonso (South Florida).

Watertown starter Thomas Casey hurled five innings allowing two runs (none earned) to pick up the win. Watertown’s bullpen posted a line of 4IP, 1ER, and one hit allowed. Adirondack starter Matt Engler tossed four plus innings allowing ten runs. 

Joe Moroney (Kansas) finished 2-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored for Watertown. Moroney was one of five Rams players to tally multiple hits. Fellow Jayhawk Justin Protacio posted two hits and a walk. The aforementioned Connor Perry, Austin Lueck, and Nik Alfonso also had multiple hits for Watertown.

Brandon Jossey (Seton Hill) finished 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored for Adirondack. Dominic Fazio (High Point) also walked twice for the Trail Blazers. Chris Divarco (Northern Illinois) added a double in the ninth.

Watertown plays host to the Newark Pilots tomorrow night for a doubleheader with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:00. Adirondack will play the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at the Robert Smith Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
