Watertown, N.Y. – The Watertown Rapids of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) are thrilled to announce the hiring of Brett Mendoza as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2018 season.
Mendoza has built a strong coaching résumé in baseball, including working as a catching coach for the National Pitching Association from 2009-2016 under renowned pitching coach, Tom House.
Mendoza will assist Rapids Field Manager David Anderson and will be in charge of the team’s offense.
“Brett is a true student of the game and is one of the better and most passionate baseball minds I’ve been around,” Anderson said. “I’m extremely excited to have him on board.”
Mendoza played four years of Division I baseball at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and graduated with a degree in business administration. He then went on to play baseball professionally in independent leagues for six seasons, including winning the North Country Baseball League championship in Watertown, N.Y., with the Newburgh Newts in his final game as a player.
“I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Watertown Rapids this season. I'm excited to return to an awesome city, and to a ballpark that has a history of great baseball tradition,” Mendoza said. “Our goal is to compete day in and day out, giving our absolute best effort, and hopefully at the end of the season, we can bring a championship home to Watertown.”
Since 2013, Mendoza has served as a coach and instructor at Beach City Baseball Academy in El Segundo, Calif. In 2016, he began coaching at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., where he serves as a hitting and catching coordinator.
The Rapids inaugural Opening Day game at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds will be Saturday, June 2, at 7:05 p.m. and will feature a fireworks show after the game. Season Tickets and 10-Pack Tickets are on sale now. The Rapids are seeking host families for the 2018 summer. Being a host family is a great experience, easier than you may think, and host families receive free season tickets.
