NEWARK, N.Y. – After winning last night to clinch the final playoff spot in the West Division, the Onondaga Flames won their second straight against the Newark Pilots by a score of 12-3.
The Flames upped run their record to 23-24, while the loss drops the Pilots to 19-30.
Zach Kemp (Wells) picks up his first win of the summer, tossing 6.2 innings, giving up 11 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, while striking out 4. Will Frank (Canisius) takes his third loss, going just 3 innings, giving up 8 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks, while striking out 6.
The Flames got the scoring started in the opening frame off of Frank. Colin BeVard (Cortland) led off the game with a single, he then moved to second with a one out, Trey Baur (Cornell) walk. Sam Little (Ithaca) drove them both in with a two run double to give Onondaga a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Flames added to their lead. Dylan Nolan (Wells) led the inning off with a walk, and Tyler Rourke (Alabama A&M) followed that with a single. BeVard moved to third on a fly out, then came around to score on a Kyle Gallagher (Cornell) sacrifice fly. Trey Baur followed that up with a single, to move Rourke to second. Both runners move up on a wild pitch from Frank. Rourke would score on the next pitch off of a Will Allocca (Virginia) passed ball. Little then drove in Baur from second to give the Flames a 5-0 lead.
The Pilots landed in the run column in the bottom half of the second, with a two-out infield single from Christian Orr (Saginaw Valley) to drive in Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC). In the bottom of the fourth, they would add another with a Parker single to drive in Colton Carney (Seton Hill).
After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Flames reentered the run column in the top of the seventh. After back singles to start the inning from Little and Matt Carey (Ithaca), Alex Canty (Monroe CC) roped a double to drive in Little. Carey would then come around to score from third on a sac fly from Nolan, and Canty would score from second on a Rourke single to give the Flames a 8-2 lead.
The Pilots got a run in the bottom half of the frame to cut the lead to 8-3. After Kemp walked the bases loaded, he was pulled for Hayden Ewell (Niagara County CC), who walked Carney with the bases loaded to score Mark McKenna (Canisius). That’s as close the Pilots would get.
In the top of the ninth, the Flames added four. Parker walked Little to lead off the inning, then hit Carey. With one out, Wyatt Myers (Buffalo) drove in Little with a single. Both Myers and Cary would come around to score when Nolan hit a first pitch offering down the right field line for a two run triple. Nolan then came in to score on a Rourke fielders choice ground out to give the Flames a 12-3 lead.
Newark will host Amsterdam tomorrow at 7:05. The Flames will host Albany at 5:00.
