ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Newark Pilots (7-21) beat the Onondaga Flames (12-11) for the second time in three days on Monday night. The Pilots beat the Flames 5-3 at Onondaga Community College after winning a game on Saturday in Newark.
The Pilots broke away from a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning. Christian Orr (Saginaw Valley State) led off the inning with a double and Mark McKenna (Canisius College) then reached on an error to put runners at the corners.
Onondaga then brought in reliever Jared Strait (Wells College). Strait walked the next two batters to force in a run.
Will Allocca (University of Virginia) then followed up the RBI walk with a single to plate the second runner of the inning and re-load the bases.
Trent Schulte (Gonzaga University) then came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the inning. Schulte then got a fly out, strikeout, and pop out to prevent any more runs from coming home.
“I came out of the bullpen with a very aggressive mentality,” Schulte said. “As a reliever those are the situations you have to get pumped up for. If you’re not then it’s really easy to be on the other end of it.”
The Flames got runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings but could not drive home any runs.
Chris Vitale (Erie CC) earned his second win (2-1) and first quality start of the season with six innings of three run baseball.
The save went to Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech University) who pitched a scoreless ninth. This was a redemption game for Griffen after the Flames scored three runs against him in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game.
Brian Nolan (Oswego State) fell to 2-1 on the season as he was tagged with the loss. Nolan gave up five runs (three earned) over six innings and recorded six strikeouts.
The defeat gives the Flames its fifth loss in a row. Onondaga will host Adirondack (8-13) for a day game on Tuesday. Newark heads home to host Geneva (16-10) on Tuesday.
