ELMIRA, N.Y. – On Sunday at Dunn Field, the Elmira Pioneers (13-13) took both games of a twin bill from the Adirondack Trail Blazers (8-13) by scores of 9-3 and 6-4 respectively.
In game one, the Trail Blazers took an early lead after a throwing error from Brett Vosik (Kansas) allowed Joe Simone (Rider) to score all the way from first.
In the bottom half the inning, the Pioneers would respond with three runs of their own to take the lead. Ayrton Schafer (Samford) drove in two with a single to left, while an Allbry Major (Xavier) sacrifice fly would add run number three.
The score would stay 3-1 until the fifth when Adirondack tied the score. Houston Roth (Ole Miss) uncorked two wild pitches that allowed two runs to score which tied the game.
The Pioneers would break the stalemate and the game wide open with a six run sixth. A groundball through the legs of the first baseman Zach Zientarski (Pitt) allowed two runs to score and then a Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) groundout plated run number three of the inning before Schafer hit into a fielder’s choice that scored another. Bryan Seamster (Ole Miss) and Joe Preziuso (Canisius) each added an RBI single later in the inning as well pushing the final score to 9-3.
Parker Ford picks up the win in relief as he tossed one scoreless inning. Houston Roth got the start but did not factor in the decision after pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs.
Zac Bygum (Dartmouth) takes the loss after giving up six runs, three earned, in one and one-third innings of relief.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Trail Blazers would once again strike first with a single run in the first inning. John Michael Boswell (Furman) hit an RBI single to left to plate the first run of the game in the first.
The Pioneers answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Conor Grammes (Xavier) drove in a run with a groundout to short and later in the inning Schafer laced a run scoring single that plated Colton Evans (UC-Davis).
The Trail Blazers would retake the lead with two runs in the top of the second. Jordan Smith (Hofstra) hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate run number one and Jordan Torrento (Adrian) drove in run number two of the frame with a groundout to first.
Once again, Elmira would respond with a single run in the bottom of the second. Grammes picked up his second RBI of the game when he drove home the tying run when he was plunked with the bases loaded to force home a run.
In the third, Adirondack would take the lead on a Boswell solo shot to left off of Pioneers starter Jackson Tedder (Virginia).
The Pioneers would jump ahead however thanks to a two run blast from Jonathan Crimmin (Siena) in the bottom of the fifth.
An insurance run would be added on in the sixth by Grammes who picked up RBI number three with a solo bomb to straight away center.
Grammes would then trade his lumber for the rubber as he came on to shut the door in the seventh inning as he picked up the save in the 6-4 win for the Pioneers.
Jackson Tedder gets the win as he pitched five innings giving up four runs while striking out two, good enough for first victory of the season.
Joe Hamrick (Hillsdale) is dealt the loss after giving up the two run homerun to Jonathan Crimmin which proved to be the difference.
The Pioneers will be on the road tomorrow, Monday, July 3, to take on the Geneva Red Wings at 7:05.
