Jammers Take Two From Newark

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Jamestown Jammers (19-5) defeated the Newark Pilots (5-19)  in both games of the doubleheader on Thursday night, taking game one by a score of 11-9, while securing a 14-8 win in game two. 

In the first game, Quinn Taylor (Felician) took the win, Andrew White (Buffalo) took the loss, and Colin Johnston (Monroe CC) picked up the save.  In the second game, Casey Vincent (St. Bonaventure) earned the win and Jordan Miller (Coastal Alabama CC) took the loss.

The Jammers got off to a quick lead in the bottom of the first, with 3 quick runs off of White.  Ben Brookover (UTSA) and Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst) both drove runs in with singles for the Jammers.  In between the singles, Collin Stack (UMBC) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  Jamestown would add 1 in the top of the second on a two-out single from Christ Conley (Canisius) to go up 4-0.

The Pilots answered with 1 in the bottom of the second on a Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC) double to drive in Peter Battaglia (Niagara).  The Jammers went back up 4 when Skyler Valentine (UTSA) scored on a wild pitch from White to make it 5-1 in the third.  The Pilots cut into the lead in the bottom half when Hunter Wells (Tyler JC) scored from third on a wild pitch, and Parker drove in Will Allocca (Virginia) with an infield single to make it 5-3.

After a scoreless fourth, the Jammers put up 4 in the top of the fifth off Pilots reliever Jake Bernardo (Fordham).  The first 2 came on a 2-run double from Valentine to go up 7-3.  Stack followed that up with a triple, and Christian Deaton (CSU Bakersfield) rounded out the scoring with a single to take a 9-3 lead.

Newark got 3 back in the bottom half of the fifth.  The first 2, on a 2-run triple from Battaglia to knock Taylor out of the game.  They cut the lead to 9-6 with a run scoring groundout from Over Torres (Yavapai CC).  The Jammers would answer in the top of the sixth with a 2-run home run from Brookover off of Bernardo.

The Pilots made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  Connor Ryan (Mercyhurst) came on to start the inning and after getting the leadoff man to fly out, he ran into some trouble.  The next three hitters reached on a hit by pitch, infield single, and walk to load the bases.  Parker drove in his third run with a sacrifice fly.  Michael O’Connor (Buffalo) followed that up with a bases loaded walk to end the night for Ryan.  Mark McKenna (Canisius) came up to face Johnston, who hit him with the first pitch to walk in a run to make it an 11-9 game.  Wells came up with the bases loaded, and hit a ground ball to the short stop O’Donnell to strand the bases loaded.

Johnston threw two pitches and picks up his second save.  Conley went 2-4 with a walk, 2 runs, and an RBI.  Brookover went 3-4 with a 2-run HR, a stolen base, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs.  Stack went 1-2 with a triple, a walk, a sacrifice fly a run scored, and 2 RBIs for the Jammers.  Battaglia went 3-4 with 2 triples, 3 runs, and 2 RBIs.  Parker went 2-3, with a double, a sacrifice fly, and 3 RBIs for the Pilots.

The Jammers got on the board quickly in game two as well, with a lead off, solo home run from Conley, his second of the summer to go up 1-0.  The Pilots would tie the score in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from Josh Loeffler (UConn).  The Jammers would add 2 in the top of the second, on a sacrifice fly from Chris Stefl (St. John’s) and a run scoring single from Conley to go up 3-1.

Jamestown would open this game up in the top of the third when they put up 7 to take a commanding 10-1 lead.  Miller hit Chris Estrada (UTSA) to start the inning, he would score on a wild pitch.  He then gave up an infield single, and back to back hit by pitches to load up the bases.  After walking John Conti (Canisius) with the bases loaded to go up 5-1, he was pulled for Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech).  Griffen gave up a single to Jimmy Standohar (Mercyhurst), walked Nick Bernick (Niagara) with the bases loaded, a run scoring groundout to Conley, and a 2-run triple to put the Jammers up 10-1 before being pulled for John Balliet (Orange Coast CC).

The Jammers got one off Balliet in the top of the fourth on a double from Standohar to go up 11-1.  Newark would get 4 in the bottom half.  Nick Ely (Notre Dame College) and Matthew Lillard (Hendrix) both scored on wild pitches to make it 11-3, O’Connor scored a run after Christian Orr (Saginaw Valley State) stole second and the throw from Connor Rule (Kansas State) sailed into center field.  Wei-Chi Chen (Vanung) drove in the Pilots fifth run with a sacrifice fly to make it.

The Pilots would get 2 more back in the bottom of the fifth when Loeffler and Ely both scored on errors to make it 11-7.  Jamestown put the hopes of a Pilots comeback to rest with 3 runs off Balliet in the top of the sixth on a triple from Conti and a double from Standohar to make it 13-6.  The 14th run came on a throwing error from Pilots catcher Nick Capitano (Canisius) after Standohar stole third, he would come around and score.  The Pilots got their final run when Ely was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Conley went 2-3 with a solo HR, 1 run, and 3 RBIs.  Conti went 2-3 with a triple, 2 walks, a stolen base, 4 runs, and 2 RBIs.  Standohar went 4-4 with 2 doubles, 2 stolen abses, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs for the Jammers.  D’Marcus Guillory went 1-3, with 2 walks, and 4 stolen bases at the top of the order for the Pilots.  Ely was 0-1 but reached 3 times on 2 walks and a hit by pitch, he also scored 2 runs and drove 1 in.

The Pilots will play at Elmira tomorrow night.  The Jammers will host Geneva.
