UTICA, N.Y. - Despite holding a lead for more than half the game, the Utica Blue Sox fell to the Elmira Pioneers 10-8 on Thursday night.
The Pioneers were able to score six runs during the top of the 7th inning, which ultimately led to their win over the Blue Sox. The win brought the Pioneers record up to 9-13 for the season. This was the Blue Sox 8th straight loss, bringing their record to 4-18.
The Blue Sox opened up the scoring in the 2nd when Devon Garcia (Ohio) got an RBI single, which allowed Nathan Thyssen (Concordia) to score. Shortly after Garcia’s RBI single, Jimmy Mendyk (LIU Post) was also able to get an RBI single, which gave the Blue Sox a 2-0 lead at the end of the 2nd.
The Blue Sox continued to increase their lead going into the bottom of the 3rd by scoring two more runs. Cole Pursell (Willamette) had an RBI single and Zane Harris (Wright State) also had a single, giving the Blue Sox a 4-0 lead. The Blue Sox were able to gain yet another run, which put their lead at 5-0.
The Pioneers answered back at the top of the 5th when they scored 3 runs, cutting the Blue Sox lead to 5-3. The Blue Sox rallied back and were able to leave the 5th inning with a 7-3 lead after gaining 2 more runs.
The Pioneers got a home run from Bradyen Combs (Kentucky), putting the game at 7-4. While the Blue Sox gained one more run at the bottom of the 6th, the Pioneers proved to have momentum when heading into the 7th inning.
The Pioneers were able to gained 6 runs and take a 10-8 lead over the Blue Sox. The rest of the game was a defensive battle as neither team gained anymore runs. The win goes to Noah Hughes (Mississippi State), who allowed 0 hits and 1 run in the inning that he started. Brian Dolan receives the loss as he he allowed 4 hits and 7 runs.
The Pioneers next match up will be on the road as they take on the Geneva Red Wings . The Blue Sox take a road trip to Adirondack tomorrow night when they play the Trail Blazers, game time is set for 7:05.
