NEWARK, N.Y. – In desperate need of a win, Houston Roth (Ole Miss) delivered an absolute gem for the Elmira Pioneers (7-12), as they shutout the Newark Pilots (4-14) by a final score of 2-0 and snapped their seven-game losing streak.
Roth was dominant in his complete-game shutout performance, as he picked up the win. Roth struck out a PGCBL-record 20 batters while allowing just two hits and walking none. Roth took a perfect game bid into the seventh inning, but with two outs Will Allocca (Virginia) doubled for the Pilots first baserunner. Roth also struck out the side on three separate occasions in the game. The win represents Roth's second of the season.
The only runs of the game came off the bat of Conor Grammes (Xavier). With one out and a man aboard in the seventh, Grammes deposited a ball over the right centerfield wall for a two-run homerun that proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
Will Frank (Canisius) was the tough luck loser for the Pilots. Frank worked seven and two-thirds innings with his only blemish being the two run homer given up in the seventh. Frank struck out four while walking just two and giving up the two runs.
The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, June 25th at 3:05 to take on the Jamestown Jammers from Diethrick Park.
