ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta Outlaws defeated the Elmira Pioneers 8-5 Tuesday night, as Nate Wrighter (Bryant College) earned his second win for the Outlaws and improves to 2-1 on the season.
It was a pitchers' duel, as both pitchers only let up one hit apiece through the first three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, Oneonta would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Ben Rhodes (Siena College) reached base on a single and would later score on a fielder’s choice.
This game wouldn’t stay tied for long, three hits and a couple of errors made by the Outlaws allowed the Pioneers to retake the lead and make the score 5-1. Grant Donahue (Virginia) would get the start for the pioneers going 5.2 innings and only allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, he would receive the no decision.
Heading into the sixth, the Outlaws would be able to chip away at Elmira’s lead and cut it down to 5-3 as Aron Fried (Quinnipiac University) would start the inning off with a leadoff walk and would eventually along with Ben Rhodes (Siena) when they would both be walked in with bases loaded and score. In the bottom of the seventh, Oneonta would take their first lead of the game as the Outlaws scored 3 runs on 3 hits. Ben Rhodes had a big night for Oneonta as he went 3-4 with 2 RBI’s.
Oneonta would extend their lead in the eighth as they tallied on two more runs to make the score 8-5. Jason Wasilnak (St. John Fisher College), Andrew Workman (Quinnipiac University) and Jake Hershman (Wofford University) would all see an appearance for an inning or less as the Outlaws bullpen was able to get the job done and seal the win for the Outlaws. The Outlaws have improved to 4-10 on the season as the Pioneers fall to 6-9. Oneonta will take the road as they head to Glens Falls to square off against the Glens Falls Dragons.
