Pilots Walk Off at Colburn Park Against Geneva

06/19/2017 11:55 PM -

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots (3-9) walked off by a final score of 4-3 against the Geneva Red Wings (9-6) in 10 innings at Colburn Park on Monday night.

After trailing 3-0 through four innings, the Pilots got one run in the fifth and two in the seventh, before winning it in the 10th.  Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung) went seven innings and allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), while striking out four.  Jared Kasco (NJIT) went six innings for Geneva and gave up four hits and one earned run. Both pitchers received no-decisions.

Justin Barr (Central Alabama C.C.) scored the first run of the ball game in the fourth on an error by Pilots second basemen Jorge Leon (Hendrix College).  Jake Evans (Alabama Southern C.C.) and Kasco drove in the other two in the inning on RBI singles to take a 3-0 lead.

The Pilots got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a Mike O’Connor (Buffalo) groundout, which cut the lead to 3-1. Newark then tied the game in the seventh on a single from O’Connor and a sacrifice fly by Mark McKenna (Canisius).

The Pilots bullpen came in relief of Wang and threw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out seven. No strikeout, however, was bigger than Chris Vitale’s (Erie C.C.) in the 10th. With the bases loaded and two outs, pitching coach Bennett Schiltz decided to go to Vitale to face lead-off hitter Matt Chamberlain (New Haven). Vitale came in and threw three straight strikes for the punch out to leave the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Pilots loaded the bases with one out off of a walk, an error and an infield single. Po-Chuan Pan (Fu Jen Catholic) then grounded into a fielder's choice to move Over Torres (Yavapai) to third. The first pitch from Geneva reliever Domenic Nardone (Siena) to Colton Carney (Seton Hill) bounced off the plate and Torres came in to score on the game-winning wild pitch for the win.

The Pilots are off tomorrow and will face the Onondaga Flames at the Onondaga Community College Baseball Complex in a doubleheader on Wednesday, June 21, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Geneva Red Wings will host the Jamestown Jammers tomorrow night.
