ELMIRA, N.Y. – What was supposed to be a doubleheader between the Elmira Pioneers (6-8) and the Jamestown Jammers (11-2) ended up just being a single game that Jamestown would win by a score of 2-0 at Dunn Field on Sunday. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled after rain and lightning came into the area and forced the tarp onto the field.
Jamestown scored their only runs of the game in the first frame. After striking out the first two hitters of the ball game, Houston Roth (Ole Miss) allowed back to back walks that were then followed up with RBI singles from Chris Estrada (UTSA) and Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst).
Roth would then settle in however, as he ended up throwing five solid innings, striking out six and allowing just two runs.
Those two runs were all the support the starter for Jamestown, Michael Ginther (Canisius). The lefty retired the first 10 hitters he faced and had faced only one over the minimum going into the 7th.
Conor Grammes (Xavier) lead off the bottom of the 7th with a double down the left field line that spelled the end of the night for Ginther. Ginther would be replaced by Colin Johnston (Monroe C.C) who would strikeout Jon Crimmin (Siena) and Ayrton Schafer (Samford) before getting Brett Vosik (Kansas) to fly out to right to end the ball game.
Ginther gets the win for Jamestown, as he pitched into the seventh inning, giving up no runs while allowing just three hits and striking out five. Colin Johnston picked up the save, his first of the season.
Houston Roth picks up the loss, a tough luck loser in a game where his offense could not muster any support.
The Pioneers will travel to Adirondack tomorrow, Monday, June 19thand then to Oneonta on June 20th, before returning home to face Geneva on June 22nd.
