Onondaga Comes Back to Beat Elmira in Extra Innings

06/16/2017 10:12 PM -

ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Onondaga Flames (5-5) picked up their second walk-off victory in three days as they defeated the Elmira Pioneers (6-6) in the 10th inning Friday night at the OCC Baseball Complex.

The 10th inning was led off with a double by Pioneers second baseman Andrew Orzel (Wofford College) when right fielder Matt Carey misplayed the ball.  However, Orzel came all the way home on a throwing error as the Flames tried to throw Orzel out at third.  Orzel finished the day 3-5 with three doubles on the day.

Pitcher Matt Bowman (SUNY Broome) was able settle down after allowing the double and a single to Blake Shinkle (Kansas University) and get out of the inning while allowing just one run (unearned).

In the bottom of the 10th Anthony Scalzo (Gonzaga University) walked to lead off the inning and then stole second.  A Webb Little(Ithaca College) single and Gage Lanning (Canisius College) hit by pitch then set up Matt Carey (Ithaca College) with the bases loaded and one out in a one run game.

Carey hit a grounder to Orzel at second base but Elmira could not complete the double paly as Gage Lanning was able to avoid the tag by Orzel.  While the Elmira infield attempted to turn the double play Scalzo and Little both scored and gave Onondaga the walk-off victory.

The Pioneers had a 5-1 lead after the first four innings led by Bryan Seamster’s (Ole Miss) and Anthony Nucerino’s (University of Connecticut) two runs scored each.

Onondaga scored three runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to one run.  After Elmira scored a run in the top of the eighth Onondaga scored two more in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at six and eventually send the game to extra innings.

Bowman picked up the victory after throwing two innings of relief to move to 3-0 on the season.

The loss was given to Noah Hughes (Mississippi State), as he fell to 0-1 in his first pitching appearance of the season.

Onondaga will host the Utica Blue Sox (2-9) on Saturday as they try to make it a three-game winning streak.  The Pioneers will head to Jamestown to face the West division leading Jammers (9-2) on Saturday.
