BOONVILLE, N.Y. - In a game full of stellar fielding from both teams, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs proved to be victorious with their bats over the Adirondack Trail Blazers 2-0.
Mohawk Valley took an early lead in the top of the second, with a pair of base hits from Russ Olive (UMass Lowell) and Tim Zeng (Fairfield); Zeng's single was an RBI scoring Olive.
Adirondack struck back in the bottom of the second with hits from Matt Codispoti (SUNY Albany) and Tyler Bruno (Iona), but were unable to bring any runs around, still trailing 1-0. Bruno finished two-for-three with two doubles.
John Hardy (MVCC) pitched well for the Blazers in his second start at home, but gave up another run to the 'Dawgs in the top of the fifth, scoring Joe Engel (Columbia). Mohawk Valley's lead increased to 2-0.
The Blazers were not able to bring any runs around to score, collecting only five hits throughout the contest. The minimal three were retired five times in total.
Defensively, both teams were aggressive in chasing fly balls and line drives. Bruno, Chuck Hooker (Alderson Broaddus) and John Michael Boswell (Furman) all with diving stops for the Blazers. Zac Bygum (Dartmouth) also snagged a hard-hit ball right back to him on the mound in the top of the seventh.
Austin Pollack (Hofstra) made a sliding catch into the fence in the bottom of the fifth, and Dan Deely (Sacramento State) and caught a hard liner at third base.
Hardy earned his first loss, Kyle Ajjan (Monmouth) earned his first win and Zach Vennaro (Mount Olive) picked up his second save in 2017.
This was the first game of a three-game series this week for the DiamondDawgs and Trail Blazers. They will square off again Friday in Little Falls, New York, on Friday, and then again in Boonville on Saturday.
