Pioneers Rout Pilots, 12-4

06/03/2017 11:26 PM -

ELMIRA, N.Y. – After falling behind 2-0 after a half inning of play, the Elmira Pioneers (2-1) would respond with five runs in the bottom half of the first and would never look back en route to their 12-4 victory over the Newark Pilots (1-2).

The Pilots would open the scoring in the top half of the first thanks in part to three Elmira errors, as a run would come home to score on a throwing error by catcher Devon Adams (Old Dominion) and a second unearned run would score later in the inning on a bases loaded walk. However, starter Jackson Tedder (Virginia) would avoid a calamitous inning as he would get Jose Leon (Hendrix) to ground out and end the threat.

Newark’s lead would not last for long however. The Pioneers would put up five in the first frame and knock out Newark starter Adam Donovan (Desales) before he could escape the inning thanks to four walks and four base hits given up by Donovan.

From that point forward, the Pioneers would have the game in control. Elmira would tack on two more in the third to increase their lead to five. Joe Preziuso (Canisius) lead off the inning with a hit by pitch and then stole second and subsequently moved to third after the catcher’s throw went into center field. A Blake Shinkle (Kansas) would score him one batter later. Later in the inning, Jon Crimmin (Siena) would line a ball to right that would score Shinkle with Elmira’s seventh run of the game.

The very next inning, Elmira blew the game wide open with their second five run inning of the ballgame. Singles by Ayrton Schafer (Samford) and Chris Davignon (Siena) to open the inning would be followed by a walk to Devon Adams that loaded the bases. Preziuso would then walk to force home a run and after a lineout by Andrew Orzel (Wofford), Shinkle would pick up his second RBI single of the ball game extending Elmira’s lead to seven. An RBI ground from Bryan Seamster (Ole Miss) would plate another run and then Allbry Major (Xavier) would single to left to drive home the fifth run of the inning.

And from there it was smooth sailing the rest of the game for Elmira. Jackson Tedder would work four innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, while striking out six. Shane Barringer (Siena) would relieve Tedder and toss 3.1 innings giving up two runs while striking out five. Recce Maniscalco (Wofford) would again be called upon to close the door, as for the second consecutive night he picked up the final five outs to seal the victory for Elmira.

Barringer picks up the win for Elmira, after coming on in relief of Tedder, throwing 3.1 and allowing giving up two runs.

Donovan gets hit with the loss for Newark, as he only lasts two-thirds of an inning and gets charged with five runs.

The Pioneers will be back in action Sunday, June 4, at 5:05 p.m. against the Jamestown Jammers at Dunn Field.
