Trail Blazers Win Big in Home Opener Over Elmira

06/01/2017 9:22 PM -

BOONVILLE, N.Y. - Opening day for the 2017 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League was Thursday and the Adirondack Trail Blazers claimed a victory in their home opener over the Elmira Pioneers 13-6.

The Blazers opened up in the bottom of the second with a fury of offense, scoring seven runs off four walks and three hits, including a grand slam from Robert Zurawski (Hillsdale College). In the fourth, Jordan Torrento (Adrian College) picked up a single, Joe Simone (Rider University) hit a double and both players came around to score, giving their club a 9-1 advantage.

Through the first five innings, Elmira struggled to get the bats going. Anthony Nucerino and Brayden Combs were the only Pioneers to record hits during that stretch. Allbry Major walked in the top of the third and made his way home, giving the Pioneers their first run of the night.

In the bottom of the fifth, Adirondack batted all the way around the order, recorded only one hit courtesy of returning Trail Blazer Chuck Hooker (Alderson Broaddus), but tallied three runs, adding to their already comfortable lead.

Elmira was able to bring in five more runs between the sixth and ninth innings, however their efforts were not enough. Brayden Combs did lead the way for Elmira's bats, finishing 2 for 5 with a single and a double. He also scored one of the team's six runs.

Matt Valin (Onondaga CC) started for the Blazers on the mound and struck out three batters through three full innings. However, JR Hilcher (Lynn University) picked up the win for his club. Hilcher struck out two, gave up one hit and allowed no runs.

Zach Eggers was the Pioneers' workhorse and was able to strike out two batters through three full innings. He was, however, responsible for allowing seven runs in the bottom of the second. He earned his first loss on the year.

On Friday, Adirondack will hit the road for the first time this season and take on the Utica Blue Sox. Elmira will defend their home field Friday against the Saugerties Stallion.

The Pioneers and Trail Blazers will go head-to-head again in Boonville on Friday, June 9.
