Former Mohawk Valley pitcher reaches major leagues

08/05/2016 9:24 AM -

Former Mohawk Valley pitcher James Hoyt is now in the big leagues.

The promotion comes after a stellar minor league career for Hoyt and he’s now in the midst of a playoff race as his Houston Astros are currently 3.5 games out of a playoff spot. Hoyt, 29, made his major league debut on Wednesday against Toronto.

In 254.1 innings in the minor leagues, Hoyt posted a 3.11 ERA with 352 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .210 off the right hander, who had a 1.16 WHIP. In the minors in 2016, Hoyt had a 1.62 ERA in 50 innings. A 0.86 WHIP and a .152 batting average against were among the lowest in Triple A before his promotion.

Hoyt’s the second Mohawk Valley pitcher to make it to the majors with Caleb Thielbar being the other. He joins five other former PGCBL players in the majors.
