Hjelle And Wilson Not Enough To Get Pioneers Win Over Blue Sox

Another beautiful day here at Historic Dunn Field as the Pioneers looked to get a home win against the Utica Blue Sox after a heartbreaker to Oneonta at home yesterday.

Utica put up two runs in the first which was sparked by a Franklin Jennings (Central Conn. S.U.) triple to lead off. However the Pioneers responded right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second as both Joe Preziuso (Canisius) and Blake Buckman (U. of Louisiana at Monroe) led off with singles to put themselves on first and second. Nick Graham would reach on an error and bring in Preziuso. After that, Storm Wilson followed up with an RBI single to the right side to tie the score at two.

The Blue Sox would tack another run on in the third after Jennings led off with a single and would bring in two runs in the sixth from a Mitchell Clandra (Eckerd) single and a RBI groundout by Robbie Young (Maryville).

The Pioneers would come back to life in the bottom of the sixth inning with back to back RBI doubles from Nick Graham (Penn State) and Storm Wilson (Kentucky), and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Plantier (UC San Diego).

Utica would score three in the seventh to put the Pioneers just out of reach of victory.

Kyle Stuart (Samford) receives the loss for Elmira, Brandon Romero (Marshall U.) was the pitcher of record when the Blue Sox came ahead and George Navadel (St. Thomas Aquinus) secured the save. Sean Hjelle (Kentucky) had the no decision but struck out nine batters in six innings pitched. A breakout day by Wilson as he was four of four at the plate with three singles and a double.
