The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is 2-for-2 over the last two weeks in the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week selections. The weekly accolades are announced by Collegiate Baseball newspaper in conjunction with the release of the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I national poll. On April 8, College of the Holy Cross outfielder Patrick Puentes (Watertown 2011) was tapped as one of three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week. Earlier today, Dartmouth College freshman designated hitter Joe Purritano (Albany 2013) became the second PGCBL-affiliated player in as many weeks to be selected as a National Player of the Week. The current Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week selections can be viewed here.
Patrick Puentes turned in a dominant doubleheader performance against conference opponent Lafayette on April 7 to sweep up the Patriot League and ECAC Division I Player of the Week awards in addition to being named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week. Puentes batted .875 (7-for-8) in the twin bill with three home runs and nine RBI. The senior slugged a three-run home run in the opening game and finished the contest with two hits in three at-bats. Puentes hit for the cycle in the night cap and was not retired in five at-bats. He went 5-for-5 with two home runs and a game high six RBI. For the period of April 1 through April 7, Puentes batted .455 (10-for-22) with three home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs scored. He ended the week as the Patriot League leader in home runs.
The East Greenbush, N.Y., native was a member of the Watertown Wizards during the PGCBL’s inaugural season in 2011. Puentes averaged nearly a hit per game for the Wizards with 30 overall hits in 33 games played. The Holy Cross outfielder batted .242 for the Wiz Kids with 16 runs scored, 13 runs batted in and eight doubles.
Joe Purritano slugged his way to the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week award. The freshman logged a pair of multiple home run games, knocked in 10 runs overall and batted .643 (9-for-14) in a four game Ivy League series with Brown. The Dartmouth designated hitter smacked three hits in the series opener on April 13 and drove in an insurance run with a sixth-inning RBI single in a 2-0 victory. The Don Bosco Prep graduate buried Brown in the night cap with a two-run triple and a two-run home run in the first four innings. He drilled his second home run of the day, a solo swat, in his final at-bat. Purritano bedeviled Bruno for three more hits on the final day of the series. He went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored in a 7-0 Dartmouth victory in the opening game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. For the second day in a row, the rookie designated hitter erupted in the night cap with two home runs. Purritano rocked a two-run home run in the third and then began the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off blast in a 7-2 victory. For the week, the Dartmouth DH batted .546 with four home runs, 11 RBI and eight runs scored.
Purritano, from Woodcliffe Lake, N.J., has signed to play in the PGCBL this summer with the Albany Dutchmen.
