Three pitchers with ties to teams in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League have earned Pitcher of the Week honors from their respective conferences.
New Jersey Insitute of Technology sophomore Mark Leiter Jr. (Amsterdam '11)
has been selected Pitcher of the Week by the Great West Conference. Leiter pitched a two-hit shutout over seven innings and struck out 14 in a game against conference-foe Chicago State on May 19 in Newark, N.J. Leiter's 14 strikeouts set a Division-I single-game school record. He fanned at least two batters in six of his seven frames and he struck out the side in order in the sixth inning. The sophomore allowed four total base runners on two singles and two walks.
The Lanoka Harbor, N.J., native finished the regular season as the Great West Conference's leader in strikeouts overall and strikeouts in conference games. He was named All-Great West Conference second team. The New Jersey Tech right-handed pitcher will take the mound this summer for the Amsterdam Mohawks.
Canisius College redshirt senior Shane Davis (Glens Falls '08)
has been named Pitcher of the Week in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Davis, in the final home start of his career, pitched a five-hitter over eight innings in a 12-1 victory over Niagara on May 19. The senior yielded one run on five hits, walked none and struck out four in a 97-pitch outing. Davis finished the regular season with a 5-6 record, 3.29 earned run average and five complete games.
The Belmont, Ont., native was the 2008 New York Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Year as a member of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. He went 5-0 with a 0.33 earned run average over eight appearances. Davis tossed two complete game shutouts and threw a no-hitter. He helped the Golden Eagles to an overall Eastern Division championship in the NYCBL and the team made an appearance in the NYCBL Championship Series.
Missouri State University sophomore Clay Murphy (Glens Falls '10)
was chosen Pitcher of the Week by the Missouri Valley Conference. Murphy threw a three-hit shutout over eight innings and struck out 10 in a 4-3 Missouri State victory over nationally-ranked Oklahoma State on May 17. Murphy retired the first 11 batters he faced and 18 of 20 over the first six frames. The sophomore carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He scattered three singles, walked four and left five Cowboy runners stranded on base.
The Wolf Lake, Ill., native pitched for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles last summer. He led the 14-team New York Collegiate Baseball League with 58 strikeouts in 61.0 innings. Murphy earned two wins and one save in 11 overall appearances. Both of his victories came over division-rival Cooperstown.
