06/18/2012 1:38 PM - The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce its first weekly award winners of the 2012 season. The awards are based on games played from June 6 through June 17.

Joe Landi (Rhode Island) of the Newark Pilots is the PGCBL Player of the Week. He is the first player in the history of the Newark Pilots to win a PGCBL Player of the Week prize. Rene Solis (St. Mary’s, Texas) of the Watertown Wizards is the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week. Solis is the second Watertown pitcher in two seasons to earn weekly recognition.

Joe Landi played and started in all eight of Newark’s games during the first 12 days of the season. Landi batted .414 (12-for-29) with 16 runs scored and seven runs driven in. He added eight walks, five stolen bases, one double and one triple. The Newark third baseman and left fielder struck out just twice in 29 at-bats. He amassed a .517 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage.. The Smithfield, R.I., native has recorded at least one hit and scored one run in all eight Newark games this season. He has five multiple run, four multiple hit and three multiple-RBI games.  Landi’s 16 runs scored and .538 on-base percentage rank first in the league. He is among the top five PGCBL hitters in batting average, hits and bases on balls. Newark's offense has accounted for 65 runs in eight games.

Landi singled and scored three runs in his first two games of the season. Against Elmira in front of over 4,600 fans at Dunn Field on June 8, the Newark three hitter reached base safely four times on two hits and two walks and he scored three runs in a 9-5 victory. Two nights later in Watertown, Landi went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, one walk and one sacrifice fly to lead the Pilots to a 12-6 win. The second of what would become a trio of three-score games came at home against Elmira on June 11. The URI rising junior tallied three times, smashed two hits and drove in two runs as Newark scored a franchise record (at the time) 15 times. Landi was part of another Newark  record on June 16 when the Pilots smashed their single-game mark with 19 scores versus Mohawk Valley. Landi went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, two walks, one triple and one stolen base.

Rene Solis
was a finalist for the 2012 Tino Martinez Award which is given to the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. This spring, Solis led the nationally-ranked St. Mary’s University Rattlers with 110 strikeouts in 117.0 innings pitched. He posted a 13-3 record with a 1.69 earned run average. Solis, who pitched for St. Mary’s in the Division II World Series, picked up in Watertown where he left off from school. In two starts against the defending league champion Newark Pilots at Watertown's Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds, Solis went 1-0 with a 0.60 earned run average. He allowed one earned run on seven hits, walked three and struck out 15. The southpaw from San Antonio did not yield an extra-base hit and he held the Pilots to a .140 batting average.

The rising junior at St. Mary’s was masterful on Opening Night for the Wizards against the Pilots in a no decision. He allowed one unearned run on two hits, walked none and struck out a season-high 11 over seven innings. Solis seated 21 of the 23 batters he faced and at one point, he retired 10 batters in a row. Exactly one week later, Solis stymied the Pilots for a run on five hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out four in a 9-1 victory for the Wizards. Solis put down eight of the first nine Newark Pilots and held the Pilots without a run for seven of his eight frames.
