- The 2012 NCAA Division I College World Series begins this Friday in Omaha, Neb., at TD Ameritrade Park. The eight team, double-elimination tournament will run from June 15 through June 26. Every game of the College World Series will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.
The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League will be represented by two players, one 2011 All-PGCBL selection and one current PGCBL roster pitcher.
University of Arkansas freshman Michael Gunn (Mohawk Valley 2011)
was a member of the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs last season. He was named All-PGCBL second team as a utility player and was selected to the PGCBL Rising Stars team. Gunn started 42 games for the Dawgs and as a recent high school graduate, batted .301 with three home runs and 24 RBI. On the mound, the future Razorback accrued a 0.90 earned run average in eight relief appearances. He struck out 13 batters in 10.0 innings and notched one save. Gunn held opponents to a .182 batting average. The Wilson, Ark., native earned a grade of 10.0 at Perfect Game’s 2011 World Showcase in Fort Myers, Fla., and at the 2010 National Showcase in St. Petersburg, Fla.
This spring, Gunn has continued in a utility role with the nationally-ranked Razorbacks. Arkansas defeated Baylor in the Super Regionals to earn a spot in the World Series. The young lefty has pitched well as a true SEC freshman. Gunn is 1-0 with a 2.57 earned run average over 14 appearances. He has struck out 19 batters in 14.0 innings and posted a .125 opponents’ batting average. Michael earned his first Arkansas win in a non-conference game against Missouri on May 2. As a hitter, Gunn has five RBI and a .250 bating average.
Stony Brook University freshman Matt Gallup (Amsterdam 2012)
is slated to pitch for the PGCBL’s Amsterdam Mohawks this summer. The Seawolves, champions of the America East conference, won the Coral Gables, Fla., regional and then knocked off Louisiana State at Alex Box Stadium in the Super Regionals. Gallup has primarily pitched in relief for Stony Brook. He is 4-0 with a 2.35 earned run average over 11 appearances. The Albany, N.Y., native has walked just four batters and struck out 13 in 23.0 innings. Gallup earned regular season victories over Farleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Marist and Maine. In the postseason, the Stony Brook frosh has a 0.00 ERA. He closed out Stony Brook’s opening-round win over Maine in the America East tournament.
Gunn and the Arkansas Razorbacks are slated to begin the World Series on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against Kent State. Gallup and the Stony Brook Seawolves are scheduled to play in the first game of the World Series against UCLA on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
