Marist College redshirt junior Chad Gallagher (Mohawk Valley '09) has been selected Pitcher of the Week in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Gallagher pitched a complete game shutout in Marist's 4-0 conference victory over Niagara on April 30. The Southboro, Mass., native scattered six hits, walked one and struck out six in a 98-pitch outing. Of Gallagher's 98 tosses, 66 went for strikes. The Marist southpaw did not allow a Niagara runner to advance to third base during the entire nine-inning contest. The nine-inning complete game is the first at Marist since 2004. The redshirt junior is now tied for the MAAC lead in victories by a pitcher.
Chad Gallagher pitched for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs during the summer of 2009. Gallagher went 2-2 with a 3.82 earned run average in seven appearances (six starts). He struck out 30 batters in 35.1 innings. The Marist product finished second on the team in strikeouts and tied for third in victories. He was one of only two Mohawk Valley pitchers to throw a complete game.
Saginaw Valley State University sophomore Carson Beauchaine (Newark '11) was tabbed Pitcher of the Week by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Beauchaine tossed a complete game four-hitter to lead Saginaw Valley State past Lake Erie 3-1 in the first game of a league doubleheader on April 30. He scattered four hits and yielded one unearned run in the fifth inning. The sophomore walked three, struck out three and faced six batters over the minimum. Beauchaine leads Saginaw with five victories, a 1.48 earned run average and 48.1 innings pitched.
The Fraser, Mich., native has signed a 2011 PGCBL contract to play for the Newark Pilots. Beauchaine is one of two Saginaw Valley State players currently listed on the Newark roster.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute senior Mike Cieszko (Watertown '10) has earned the Pitcher of the Week award in the Liberty League. Cieszko fired a complete game one-hitter for the Engineers in a 5-1 victory over rival Clarkson on April 30. The senior allowed one run on one hit, walked one and struck out 10 batters in the seven-inning contest. He faced just two batters over the minimum. Cieszko struck out six of the first nine batters he faced and he struck out the side in the second inning on just nine pitches as part of a run of five strikeouts in a row.
The Stevenson Ranch, Calif., native pitched for the Watertown Wizards last summer. He was one of Watertown's representatives at the 2010 New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game. Cieszko led the Wizards in wins (four) and innings pitched (52.1). He went 4-3 with a 4.82 earned run average over eight appearances. He struck out 39 to finish second on the team in that category. The RPI Engineer pocketed wins over Oneonta, Amsterdam, Glens Falls and Mohawk Valley. He struck out a season-high 10 in Watertown's season opener against Oneonta on June 5.
A belated congratulations goes to Paradise Valley C.C. sophomore pitcher Brian King (Mohawk Valley '11). King was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on April 26. King threw a complete game one-hitter against Glendale on April 22. He walked none and struck out four. It was King's second no-hitter in two seasons at Paradise Valley. He tossed a perfect game against Luna (N.M.) C.C. in Feb. 2010.
