Week 6 Player and Pitcher of the Week Named

07/15/2019 7:12 AM -

During each week of the 2019 PGCBL season, the league office will recognize one position player and one pitcher as the League's Player and Pitcher of the Week. Standout performances from the current top teams in both the East and West Divisions led to this week's honors heading to Amsterdam and Utica.

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce the selection of Amsterdam's Matt Padre (Manhattan) as the PGCBL Player of the Week, and Utica's Andrew Hill (Wooster) as the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week.

Amsterdam picks up their third weekly award of the season, as Padre joins former Player of the Week Max Costes (Maryland) and last week's top pitcher, Dale Stanavich. Hill is the first weekly honoree to come from the Utica Blue Sox this season, and marks Utica's first PGCBL Pitcher of the Week since JT Gosweiler (Iona) was recognized by the league in the second week of the 2018 season.

In 13 at-bats on the week, Padre led the PGCBL in batting average (.538) and runs batted in (11). The catcher helped the Mohawks become the first team in the league to clinch a spot in the playoffs by reaching base nine times in 15 plate appearances, and drove in three or more runs three times. His biggest hit of the week came on Friday, when he hit a fourth inning grand slam that proved to be the difference in a 6-3 win over Oneonta. He also added four more RBIs on four hits against the Outlaws on Saturday, and drove in three runs against Watertown on Tuesday.

Padre is coming off his sophomore season with the Manhattan Jaspers, where he was a starter for tye second season in a row. In 197 at-bats, the Flemington, New Jersey native hit .279 with 33 runs batted in, hitting four home runs with a .371 on base percentage. He was one of two Jaspers to be named a First Team All MAAC selection, as he was selected as the conference's top catcher after hitting .390 in conference play.

Hill climbed the mound twice for the Utica Blue Sox, who have won eight consecutive contests to take possession of first place in the West. His week started on Tuesday, when he retired the final five batters of the game in a victory over Adirondack, striking out two. His defining performance, though, came on Sunday against the Geneva Red Wings. He tossed six shutout innings, striking out nine Red Wings in a 2-1 Utica victory. Over the six innings, Hill allowed just two hits, and moved his strikeout total to eleven over his 7.2 innings of work on the week. The win allowed Utica to pass Geneva in the West Division standings.

The sophomore from New Albany, Ohio has been a key piece for the Blue Sox after pitching for the second year at The College of Wooster. This past season, Hill helped the Scots to an appearance in a Super Regional, tossing 69.2 innings with a 4.39 ERA. His season-defining performance came on April 11, when he fired a seven-inning no-hitter.

The PGCBL is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Padre and Hill over the last seven days. The league will continue to honor the best performances in the PGCBL throughout the summer with both nightly and weekly awards.
