Rain and soggy weather got the best of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League on Monday, July 24. Every game on the schedule was affected by the inclement weather in some fashion, although two results went down as final. Here’s a recap of Monday night’s contests:
Mohawk Valley (25-14) 3, Amsterdam (30-12) 0 (7 innings)
With a win over the Mohawks, the DiamondDawgs moved back into second place in the East Division over the Albany Dutchmen, who were idle on Monday (more on that later). Mohawk Valley scored in each of the first two innings on a Russ Olive (UMass-Lowell) RBI single and a Dan Deely (Sacramento State) sac fly. Meanwhile, Douglas Molnar (Wagner) tossed 6.0 shutout innings to earn the win and Levi Abrahamson (Treasure Valley C.C.) received a save with a scoreless seventh, as the game was called with one out in the home half of the seventh inning.
Newark (17-26) 2, Geneva (26-18) 0
The Pilots and Red Wings were able to play the minimum five innings at Colburn Park, before precipitation forced the umps to call it a night. In the bottom of the fourth, Newark tallied two runs on RBI base hits off the bat of Colton Carney (Seton Hill) and Jonathan Parker (Jones County J.C.). That was enough offense for starting pitcher Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung (Taiwan)), who struck out eight and allowed just two hits in his 5.0 innings of work. Geneva’s Winfred Nelson (Hilbert) was taxed with the loss, despite giving up the two runs on just four hits.
Elmira (23-20) 3, Utica (15-26) 3
Monday night’s contest at Donovan Stadium was halted in the sixth inning with the score even at 3-all. The game will be finished as part of a doubleheader at Dunn Field in Elmira, N.Y., on Saturday, July 29, beginning at 5:35 p.m. Devon Garcia (Ohio) highlighted the first few innings of play with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second for the Blue Sox, while Taylor Olmstead (Southern New Hampshire) smacked an RBI double in the fifth to level the score. For the Pioneers, Devon Adams (Old Dominion) is 0-for-1 with an RBI grounder in the top of the second. He also walked and scored on a Colton Evans (UC Davis) double in the fifth.
