NYPL Hall of Fame has some familiar names for PGCBL fans

Dick Allen with the Elmira Pioneers

The New York-Penn League has announced its Hall of Fame class for this year and there are some familiar names for many fans, who now see PGCBL baseball in many of the stadiums these legends played in.

The 2016 NYPL class is highlighted by Pete Rose, Dick Allen and Jorge Posada. All three played in NYPL stadiums that now house PGCBL teams, a testament to the quality venues PGCBL players now compete in.

Rose, who still holds the record for most MLB hits, got his start (and hit .277) in the New York-Penn League with the Geneva Redlegs in 1960. McDonough Park is now home to the Geneva Red Wings in the PGCBL.

Like Rose, Allen began his professional career in 1960, with his 60 miles away in Elmira at Dunn Field. The future National League Rookie of the Year hit .281 with eight home runs for the Pioneers, who now compete in the PGCBL at the same historic location.

Posada, the most recent player of the trio, transitioned to catcher from second base in 1991 while playing with the Oneonta Yankees while playing at Damaschke Field, which is now home to the Oneonta Outlaws of the PGCBL.

The PGCBL is affiliated with Perfect Game, the largest independent scouting service in the country.  Last year, more than 1,400 professional players had either worn the uniform of a PGCBL team or participated in a Perfect Game event.
