Last night’s games:

Mohawk Valley 3 Albany 2

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs held on to defeat the Albany Dutchmen, 3-2, and advance to the East Division Finals. The DiamondDawgs will face the Amsterdam Mohawks with game one tomorrow night at Amsterdam. A full box score of the game can be found here.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Mohawk Valley scored its three runs. Eric Strano led off the inning with a walk and later came around to score on a Trey Stover RBI single. The next batter, Gus Craig, plated Joey Carcone with a sacrifice. Zach Collett, who finished the regular season tied for the PGCBL lead with six home runs, followed with an RBI single that brought in Stover.

Albany rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth to make it a one run game. With the bases loaded, Cameron Miller hit a 2-RBI single through the right side that scored Ernie Clement and Danny Hrbek. Lucas Godlewski got Nick Jewett to strike out swinging to end the inning and Bryan Greig struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win for the DiamondDawgs.

Nick Petrella pitched a solid game for Mohawk Valley in picking up the win. The right-hander tossed 7.2 innings and struck out seven batters while allowing the two runs (both unearned). He walked one batter and allowed just four hits. During the regular season, the Skidmore product went 4-3 with a 3.42 ERA. Jake Welch threw 6.1 innings and allowed the three Mohawk Valley runs (all earned) in taking the loss. The right-hander walked two and struck out two.

Elmira 5 Watertown 3

The Elmira Pioneers used a big fifth inning to go on and defeat the Watertown Rams, 5-3, and advance to the West Division Finals. The Pioneers will face the Newark Pilots with game one tomorrow night at Newark. A full box score of the game can be found here.

Watertown got out to an early lead in the top of the first. James Bonds led off the game with a single and Santino Alteri followed with a hit by pitch. Shortstop Nick Moore then hit a single up the middle to give the Rams the first run of the game. Willi Martin followed with an RBI groundout that scored Alteri to make it 2-0 visitors. Elmira got a run back in the bottom of the second on an Alteri error to make it 2-1.

In the third, James Bonds again led off the inning with a single. He was sacrificed to second by Alteri and came around to score on a Willi Martin RBI single to right field. Elmira’s big inning came in the bottom of the fifth when the Pioneers scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead, the final score. Michael Fahrman hit a 2-RBI single that scored Chris Kalousidian and TJ Dixon and two runs scored on an Alteri error.

Bryson Hough, the regular season league ERA leader, allowed the three Watertown runs (all earned) in seven innings of work to pick up the win for the Pioneers. During the regular season, the right-hander went 5-0 with a 1.02 ERA in 53 innings pitched. Mitch Sewald, who led the league in strikeouts this year, allowed the five Elmira runs (three earned) in taking the loss. The right-hander tossed five innings and struck out four batters.

Elmira at Newark 7:05 p.m.

In game one of the West Division Finals, the Elmira Pioneers will travel to Newark to face the Pilots at Colburn Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

In a rematch of the West Division one-game playoff from the 2013 playoffs, the Elmira Pioneers will face the Newark Pilots in the post season, this time in the West Division Finals. The two teams were tied for first place heading into the last day of the regular season, but Newark won the division with a win and two Elmira losses. Elmira won the season series, 7-5, and went 4-2 against the Pilots at Colburn Park. Overall, Newark went 16-9 at home this season.

Mohawk Valley at Amsterdam 6:35 p.m.

In game one of the East Division Finals, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will travel to Amsterdam to face the Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Probable Pitchers:

MV: Ed Lewicki (Siena) 2-1, 3.57 ERA, 37 Ks, 45.1 IP, .230 BAA

AM: EJ Ashworth (Fairfield) 5-0, 2.02 ERA, 45 Ks, 49 IP,  .194 BAA

After Amsterdam went 36-11 during the regular season, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will look to upset the Mohawks in the East Division Finals. Amsterdam won the season series, 6-2, and won the most recent matchup on the second to last day of the regular season, 20-5. Amsterdam went 18-5 at home this year, while Mohawk Valley was just 9-12 away from Veterans Memorial Park.
