Last night’s games:
Glens Falls 4 Watertown 0 Game One
In game one of a double-header in Glens Falls, the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go on and defeat the Watertown Rams, 4-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, John Lynn delivered an RBI single to give Glens Falls a 1-0 lead. Mark Powell added an RBI single two batters later and JQ Folena had a 2-RBI single to left field to conclude the scoring in the inning.
A dominant start from Ben Brown helped lead Glens Falls to victory. Brown tossed a complete game (seven innings) shutout, allowing just three hits and he did not walk a batter. The Coker product is now 2-1 on the season and has a 3.56 ERA. At Coker this past year, the right-hander went 4-3 in 15 appearances, 10 being starts, and posted a 4.17 ERA.
For the Rams, Mitch Sewald allowed four runs in six innings, taking his third loss of the season. He struck out six and allowed five hits. Robbie Alessandrine and Shane Dressler each went 1-for-2.
Glens Falls 3 Watertown 1 Game Two
After dominant pitching led the Glens Falls Golden Eagles to a 4-0 win in game one of a double-header against the Watertown Rams, the Golden Eagles used another strong pitching performance to win game two and sweep the twin bill, 3-1.
Golden Eagle starter Michael Harrington picked up his second win of the season, going six innings while allowing three hits and just one run (unearned). Tyler Ehlers tossed a scoreless seventh inning to notch his second save of the season.
The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch. It was all zeros until the bottom of the sixth when Michael Bradshaw singled in a run and another run scored on a Rams error.
Watertown starter Anthony Magovney allowed the three Glens Falls runs in his Rams debut. The right-hander went 5.1 innings before being relieved by Jake Sale. Tyler Decker and Shane Servoss each went 1-for-2 in the game.
Elmira 4 Utica 0
In a rain-shortened contest in Utica, the Elmira Pioneers shutout the host Brewers, 4-0, to pull within a half game of the Watertown Rams in the West Division.
Taylor Ahearn was the story of the game. The right-hander went the distance, allowing just two hits and shutting out Utica for his first win of the season. Ahearn retired the final 13 batters he faced to preserve the shutout.
Elmira scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead for good. Chris Kalousdian drove a double to left center field to score Jason Patnick, and TJ Dixonf and Nick Walker each hit RBI doubles later in the inning. Walker added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it a 4-0 game. With Elmira hitting in the top of the seventh inning, the skies opened and the game was called.
Amsterdam 3 Mohawk Valley 2
In a battle for first place in the East Division, it was the visiting Amsterdam Mohawks who came out on top over the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. After starting the season 1-6, Amsterdam is now 17-7 and has won 16 of 17.
The Mohawks scored two runs in the top of the third and a lone run in the fourth to finish with three runs. Player of the Week Josh Gardiner singled home Marcus Carson for the first run of the third inning and last week’s Player of the Week, John Razzino, scored Gardiner with an RBI single. The run in the fourth came on a Brendan Tracy RBI single, scoring JaVon Shelby.
Mohawk Valley responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on wild pitches to make it a 3-2 game. The Amsterdam bullpen combination of Thomas Hackimer, Daniel Castro and Zach Breen did not allow a hit in five scoreless innings of work. Hackimer picked up the win, his second of the season, and Breen notched the save, his third of the season.
