The Daily Rundown: June 14, 2014

Once again there was only one game last night. Let’s recap:

Newark 4 Amsterdam 3

Newark was able to come back from a 3-2 deficit to beat Amsterdam 4-3 in the Pilots’ home opener. A crowd of 505 people saw the Pilots score two runs in the bottom of the fifth and hold off the Mohawks in the Pilots’ fifth win of the season.

Tanner Giesel hit a two-run double in the fifth to score Darian Hairston and Samm Wiggins, giving Newark the lead for good. In the top half of the inning, Amsterdam scored three runs on a groundout, a Josh Gardiner single and a JaVon Shelby double.

The Pilots scored lone runs in both the second and the third on errors to take an early 2-0 lead. Newark’s offense was led by Tommy Wagner and Louis Silverio, who both tallied two hits. Marcus Carson and Blake Logan both went 2-for-4 for Amsterdam.

Andrew Tidwell tossed an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief to pick up the win for Newark. Andy Ward allowed the two Newark runs in the fifth as he took the loss.

Updates on the postponed games:

The Watertown/Albany game scheduled for last night will be made up on June 18 in Albany as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

The Glens Falls/Utica game scheduled for last night will be made up on July 8 in Utica as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

The Adirondack/Mohawk Valley game scheduled for last night will be made up on June 19 in Little Falls as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Preview of tonight’s games:

UPDATE: The Glens Falls/Watertown game scheduled for today at 12:00 p.m. has been postponed. It will be made up on July 2 in Glens Falls as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Elmira at Amsterdam 6:35 p.m.

The 3-3 Elmira Pioneers will make the trip to Amsterdam to take on the 2-5 Amsterdam Mohawks. Amsterdam is coming off a 4-3 loss against Newark a night ago. As a team, the Mohawks are hitting .207 but have posted a combined ERA of 3.41, third best in the PGCBL. Elmira is hitting a league-leading .278 as a team with a combined ERA of 3.94. First pitch at Shuttleworth Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Utica at Newark 7:05 p.m.

A night after a home-opening win against the Amsterdam Mohawks, the Newark Pilots will once again play at Colburn Park, this time against the Utica Brewers. Utica, who last played on Tuesday, is coming off a loss against the Adirondack Trail Blazers. The Brewers have a league-worst 1-5 record while the Pilots are a half-game behind the Albany Dutchmen for best record at 5-2. First pitch in Newark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Mohawk Valley at Adirondack 7:15 p.m.

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will make the hour trip from Little Falls to Boonville as they take on the Adirondack Trail Blazers. The DiamondDawgs currently sit a game and a half out of first place in the East Division while Adirondack is two and a half games out in the West. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

There have been 11games postponed due to rain so far this year. As of June 14 last year, there were 21.
