Mohawk Valley @ Albany
In the first game of the 2014 season, the Albany Dutchmen host the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. Albany finished third in the East Division last year with a record of 26-22. Mohawk Valley finished the 2013 campaign with a record of 26-19, good for second in the East Division. This Opening Night matchup is a rematch of the first round of the East Division playoffs last year in which Albany defeated Mohawk Valley 6-5 in 11 innings. In the top of the 11th, Tyler Orris (Millersville) walked with the bases loaded to bring home what went on to be the winning run. Both Albany and Mohawk Valley hit .264 as a team for the 2013 campaign with Mohawk Valley leading the league in stolen bases (120) and Albany second (99). Albany took the season series against the DiamondDawgs in 2013, 3-1. First pitch for the 2014 opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Newark @ Glens Falls
Newark opens the 2014 season with a three-hour bus ride to Glens Falls where they will face the perennial-contenders that are the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. Despite finishing 26-22 in the 2013 regular season, the Golden Eagles were shut out of the playoffs for the first time in the team’s PGCBL history. Newark finished second in the West Division with a 22-25 record but fell short in the first round of the playoffs against Elmira. As a team Newark hit .267 in 2013 and tied for first in the league with 12 triples. Strong defense also helped the Pilots, posting a league-best .962 fielding percentage. Glens Falls hit .257 as a whole but was led by a pitching staff that posted a combined 3.31 ERA, tops in the PGCBL. The Golden Eagles finished third in the league in least walks allowed with 143 in 405.1 IP. The two teams met three times in 2013 with Glens Falls taking the season series 2-1. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Watertown @ Adirondack
The first game of the “Mayor’s Cup” comes as the first game of the season for both teams. Watertown is coming off a 2013 season in which the team went 29-19 to win the PGCBL West Division for the first time in the team’s PGCBL history. Their season was cut short in the East Division Championship Series by the Elmira Pioneers, who swept the Silver and Black two games to none. In Adirondack’s first season in the PGCBL, the team went 17-30 but led the league with 37 home runs. Watertown finished second in the league in runs scored last season with 260 and led the league with 216 walks. Watertown and Adirondack met nine times in the 2013 season with Watertown winning the “Mayor’s Cup” seven games to two. First pitch in Boonville is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
