The Adirondack Trail Blazers and the Watertown Rams split a doubleheader played at the Smith Sports Complex in Boonville on Thursday night. The Blazers won the first game 10-8 while the Rams took the second game 8-4.
In game one, The Trail Blazers struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning Shane Allen(Northeastern University) singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI groundout by Tom Bouck(NJIT).
Watertown came right back to take the lead in the top of the second as Brice Greager doubled and scored. Trevor Marino also scored on a Brad Rush single to make it 2-1.
In the bottom half of the second, Adirondack’s Connor Garelick(Pepperdine)walked, Bobby Slagle(Villanova) singled and Vin Barbato(Brescia U.) walked to load the bases. With two outs, Austin Hatfield(U of Memphis) scorched a grand slam over the left field wall giving the Blazers a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Rams benefited from three Blazers errors and a hit by pitch to score three runs on no hits to tie the game at five.
In the bottom of the fourth, Slagle singled, Luke Emling(Villanova) followed with a single of his own and Barbato reached on an error. Hatfield promptly singled scoring Slagle to make it a 6-5 Balzers lead. The big blow of the inning however, was with the bases still loaded, Bouck crushed a 400 ft. grand slam over the right field wall to make it 10-5.
The Rams never gave up as they scored three runs in their top of the sixth with a three run basses clearing double by Brad Rush to make it 10-8. Unfortunatley for the Rams, that was it for the scoring in game one.
Matt Engler(MVCC) picked up the win for Adirondack while Austin Bartley(Shippensburg U.) earned his third save of the young season. Thomas Casey took the loss for the Rams.
In game two, Watertown struck first in their half of the second as Bobby Indeglia hit a three run homer to right center to make it 3-0. In the bottom of the inning, Matt Chaidez(Cal St. Stanislaus) rocked a solo shot to left to make it 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, the Rams scored three runs as Colin Theroux nailed a three run double to make it a 6-1 game in favor of Watertown. In the top of the fifth, Bobby Indeglia knocked in Nick Alfonso with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it a 7-1 contest.
The Blazers scored one in the bottom of the fifth Chaidez scored on a Brandon Jossey(Seton Hill U) double to make it 7-2. Te Rams put up another run in the top of the sixth on a passed ball to make it 8-2.
Adirondack wouldn’t go down without a fight as Garelick socked a base hit over first base and Chris DiVarco(Northern Illinois U.) drove Garelick in with a double down the left field line. Riley Moonan‘s(Fairleigh Dickinson U.) singled then scored DiVarco to make it 8-4 and that’s where the scoring ended.
Joe Adel picked up the win for the Rams and Chas Parsons took the loss for the Blazers.
Watertown(5-6) takes on Utica tomorrow at the Duffy fairgrounds at 7pm while Adirondack(4-7) travels to Cooperstown to play the Hawkeyes at Doubleday Field. First pitch is at 5pm.
