The 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft has come and gone and for the second year in a row, the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League set a new league record as 31 players from PGCBL clubs were selected. The previous mark of 30 was set last season. Over the last three years, 84 players from teams in the PGCBL have been selected in the Major League Draft.

"The quality of play and the skill level of our players have really taken off,” stated PGCBL President Jeff Kunion. “This year we set a league record for the number of players selected in the MLB draft.  We also saw a significant increase in the number of players taken in the early draft rounds.  We had more top ten round draft picks this year than our two previous years combined.  And, we more than doubled the number of top 20 round selections."

Through the first 10 rounds and two days of the draft, 10 players were chosen including fourth-round pick Nicholas Pivetta (Glens Falls 2012) and 10th-round selection Ross Kivett (Glens Falls 2012), the 2012 PGCBL Player of the Year. Pivetta, grabbed by the Toronto Blue Jays, was the first PGCBL player tapped in the draft. Both Pivetta and Kivett competed in the PGCBL last summer. Pivetta’s fourth-round selection also made him the highest draft choice to have played in the PGCBL. Last June, Dylan Baker (Glens Falls 2011) was a fifth-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians. The 10 selections in the first 10 rounds doubled last years’ group of five players selected in rounds one through 10. Other players from PGCBL squads taken on the second day of the 2013 draft included Mikey Reynolds (Mohawk Valley 2011), Jimmy Dykstra (Amsterdam 2011), John Murphy (Adirondack 2009), Omar Garcia (Oneonta 2012), Brandon Trinkwon (Albany 2011) and Dylan Manwaring (Elmira 2013).

The number of draftees on the third and final day of the draft also increased from 2012 as Major League teams selected 20 players in rounds 11 through 40. All total, 20 players were chosen. The 13th round was the most active for the PGCBL with three draft choices while two players each were scooped up in the 19th, 24th and 32nd rounds. The third day of the draft also included the selections of several 2012 PGCBL award winners – PGCBL single-season and career strikeout leader Mark Leiter, Jr. (Amsterdam 2011-12) was taken in the 22nd round (661st overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies and PGCBL 2012 All-Star Game MVP Giuseppe Papaccio (Amsterdam 2012) was grabbed by the Chicago Cubs in the 18th round (528th overall).

Looking at the numbers on a team-by-team basis, the defending league champion Amsterdam Mohawks paced all PGCBL clubs with six former players drafted. Glens Falls, Mohawk Valley and Elmira all had four players. Watertown followed with three while Newark, Adirondack and Utica all were represented in the draft by two players each. Fourteen drafts picks were part of the PGCBL’s inaugural season in 2011 and nine suited up for PGCBL clubs last summer.

According to Baseball America’s draft database, 20 of the 31 drafted players have already signed professional contracts. Those players will begin their professional careers at the short-season level later this month.
