New Mexico Junior College sophomore pitcher Nic Pivetta (Glens Falls 2012) has been ranked by Baseball America and Perfect Game USA as one of the top 10 junior college players eligible for the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Baseball America has rated Pivetta fourth among all JUCO draft prospects in its’ recently released “2013 BA 500 Draft Preview.” Perfect Game USA’s most recent "Top 100 Junior College Prospects" has Pivetta listed eighth. The full Baseball America Top 500 can be viewed here and Perfect Game’s Top 100 Junior College Prospects can be viewed here along with a PG scouting report on Pivetta.

Overall, the 6-foot-5 flamethrower from Victoria, British Columbia is slotted 105th among the top 500 draft prospects by Baseball America and 138th by Perfect Game USA. Late last month, Perfect Game listed the Canadian hurler as the second-best prospect in the state of New Mexico. The Canadian Baseball Network has Pivetta ranked fourth among all draft-eligible Canadians. The New Mexico JC sophomore is projected as a third-to-fifth round pick. He debuted among Perfect Game USA's top junior college prospects last fall after a strong fall season and was ranked third among all JUCO draft prospects.

Pivetta, who pitched for the PGCBL’s Glens Falls Golden Eagles last summer, was one of the top arms for the NJCAA Division I New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds (43-14) this past spring. Pivetta topped the T-Birds in innings pitched (83.0) and tied for the team lead in games started (13). The sophomore went 9-2 with a 3.33 earned run average and six complete games over 13 appearances. He struck out 56, walked 23 and limited opposing hitters to a .235 batting average. Pivetta finished second on the team in victories, tied for second in complete games and third in earned run average. He worked at least five innings in 11 of his 13 starts and lasted at least seven frames six times. Pivetta did not allow an earned run in three seven-inning complete games.   He struck out at least three batters in every start and recorded a season high seven strikeouts against Clarendon on March 3.

The 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft begins on June 6. The first round will be televised on the MLB Network starting at 7:00 p.m. The draft will continue on June 7 with rounds two through 15 being broadcast exclusively on MLB.com. The final portion of the 2013 draft will take place on June 8 with rounds 16 through 40.
