Baseball America has ranked relief pitcher Chris Cox (Watertown 2010) of the Can-Am League’s Quebec Capitales second among the top professional prospects in all of independent baseball. The list of 20 players was released on Oct. 16. The full list and how it was compiled can be found here.

Cox was a set-up man for the Can-Am League champion Capitales. The hard-throwing righty pitched in 36 games during the regular season and struck out 38. He finished second among all Quebec pitchers in appearances and ended the season among the league’s top 10. The Canisius College product logged 44.1 innings and accrued a 1-2 record with one save and a 3.45 earned run average. Quebec has won the last four Can-Am League championships.

The St. George, Ontario, native made his professional debut on May 18 against the Rockland Boulders. He threw one scoreless inning in a 13-0 victory. Between July 14 and August 13, Cox pitched in 18 games and conceded just two earned runs. He shut out opposing offenses in 16 of the 18 contests.

According to his Baseball America prospect profile; “Cox showed excellent velocity as a set-up man for Quebec. He sat at 92-94 mph and touched 95 with his two-seam fastball.”

Cox fanned 113 batters over his final two collegiate seasons at Canisius. He was a 39th-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Chris was a starting pitcher for the Watertown Wizards in 2010. He struck out 22 batters in 25.2 innings over four starts.
